You’ve done the garden tours, house tours, so how about a kitchen tour? And not just any kitchen, this Coral Gables Tour of Kitchens 2016 is back again, on February 6 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m with looks at home kitchens, table settings, food samplings and more.
People often ask me to recommend restaurants with a water view, especially when they have friends coming to Miami from out of town. Alas, in many cases you have to settle in the food department to get the view. And then there's the choice of going for a "buzzy" place or one that's serene, so you can contemplate the beauty of nature. The terrace of La Mar by Gaston Acurio is a lovely spot, and the food is very good, especially if you order well. Il Gabbiano is also a good bet, though be sure to ask the price of daily specials. You can also eat well at Seaspice and Modern Garden on the River which I put in the "scenester" (as is see and be seen) category. The River is a also good bet for visitors who have done the South Beach thing. Then there are the places for the happy hour crowd that are all about the mingling and are mostly singles. I went to a few places in Sunny Isles and South Beach, but let’s just say they weren’t memorable. A prime water viewing spot that I've been to over the years has been the restaurant at the Grove Isle Resort, almost like an island off of Coconut Grove. It has had numerous changes in chef and management in the past 20 years or so, and recently I went to the newest iteration, called Palmeiras Beach Club, 4 Grove Isle Drive (T.305-858-8300) .
On Saturday, January 30 from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m., the Galleria of the Coral Gables Museum , 285 Aragon Avenue, will become a marketplace of gourmet and professional kitchen, bar and entertaining items, from pots and pans to dishes, small appliances, and more -- all gently used and donated by either members of Les Dames D'Escoffier Miami or some major Miami hotels. Also, find out about Les Bons Amis and how you can go to Les Dames social events and outings including an upcoming tour and tasting at Paradise Farms and the popular Tropical Brunch.
Eating news and finds for January -- Miami Beach Botanical Garden's Taste of the Garden event is back this month; a candidate for best dessert of 2016 list and delish pasta; Miami finally gets a serious contender for top donut place; and where to work off the calories following Michelle Obama's lead.
Cantina La Veinte Mexican restaurant has been one of the places I go back to the most -- one time for an elegant dinner complete with mariachis to celebrate a girlfriend's landmark birthday, other times with groups of friends for lunch or dinner. I've known there was a "deli and cafe" downstairs next to the River, but never went there, assuming it was about getting a sandwich and coffee or a pastry. Wrong. It turns out this is one of the neighborhood gems for a casual bite with Mexican food that's very fresh and super tasty along with a River view.
It's about time Hakkasan had some serious competition in the Asian cuisine department. Welcome Jaya, the new modern Asian restaurant in The Setai, 2001 Collins Avenue (T.855-923-7899). But there's a new twist. Jaya's concept is inspired by the silk and ancient spice trading routes, so that means regional specialties from Southeast and Northern Asian cultures.
You've read earlier about my choices for the best desserts of 2015 and now it's time for my best dishes of the year. Probably one of the most interesting new developments in 2015 is that the restaurants or eateries are spread out all over town -- from the predictable South Beach and Brickell to Wynwood, MiMo (Biscayne Blvd), Sunny Isles, Downtown and Aventura, which shows how the Magic City is really coming into its own on the restaurant scene. Dishes range from pastas and vegetables to meat and fish.
If you want something different for Christmas dinner this year, we've picked some less conventional choices -- from a "Feast of the Seven Fishes" and Spanish "cochinilo" (roast suckling baby pig) to Modern Asian and a take away dinner from one of Miami's leading caterers.
Where to have lunch during Art Basel Miami when you’re doing art show and gallery hopping? And even if you aren’t hungry, you may need to sit down and relax. Here are some select choices in Midtown, The Design District and Wynwood (including a new Laduree tea salon) with reliably good food and shouldn’t be a crowded scene because either they’re new or lesser known. This is Part II of the series, the first part was on eateries near the main event in the Convention Center.
