Where to have lunch during Art Basel Miami when you’re doing art show and gallery hopping? And even if you aren’t hungry, you may need to sit down and relax. Here are some select, reasonably priced choices in Midtown, The Design District and Wynwood (including a Laduree tea salon) with reliably good food and shouldn’t be a crowded scene because either they’re new or lesser known. This is Part II of the series, the first part was on eateries near the main event in the Convention Center.
Midtown:
Though we like Sugarcane and Bocce, unless you eat in off hours, they’re typically packed with a wait. Go south of 29th Street to Made In Italy , 10 N.E. 27th Street (T.786-360-5671), a gourmet store and casual eatery with salads, cold platters, sandwiches, and daily pasta specials from different regions of Italy. And while you’re there you can pick up some olive oil and wine from among a large selection.
Design District:
Maison Laduree, known for its macarons, has a tea salon in Chrome Hearts. 4025 NE 2nd Avenue (T.786-953-7394). It’s oh so chic and French with charming waitresses, the famed confection with a selection of teas and coffees, but more importantly, sandwiches and salads including an exclusive Miami salad. There’s indoor and outdoor seating in a garden courtyard.
ella (140 NE 39th Street): The fourth restaurant of Michael Schwartz, ella is a light and simple pop-up café with a punch in the heart of Palm Court – right by Prada. Serving breakfast, lunch and late afternoon food, its open kitchen has a chalkboard menu wall that promises fresh-pulled espresso, sandwiches, hot soup made daily, charcuterie, cheese, glasses of wine – all available until they run out. If they still have some by the time you get there, grab one of their gourmet donuts. They change the flavor daily (white chocolate pistachio and cranberry-filled, anyone?), and they’re all delicious.-
Wynwood:
NOA (2711 NE 2nd Avenue): A random-looking spot in the heart of Wynwood, NOA is easy to miss – but you shouldn’t. With its menu of delicious, reasonably-priced Mediterranean food like Greek salad over grilled eggplant, baked salmon over butter lemon, and focaccia sandwiches with curry chicken Salad, alfalfa and cranberries. Pair it with a glass of wine, and you can easily get out of there for around $20 a person.

Went to Made in Italy last night for a Wines of Veneto event. A great place to eat while in Wynwood or the Design District during Art Basel, with friendly staff. Great wines and olive oils too!
