With the opening of the Red Thread Art Studio in Coral Gables with 18 female artists in residence and classes for adults and children, fiber art is happily getting its due in Miami. Even if you don’t take classes, it’s well worth a visit, to see the artists at work and their highly creative works and, if you’re so inclined, buy something.

Red Thread Art Studio artists from all over the Americas have all been brought together, inspired and empowered by prominent fiber artist Aurora Molina, a fiber art expert, educator, the co-founder of FAMA, Fiber Artists Miami Association, and founder of ”Play Studio Atelier,” a hands on fiber arts educational program with workshops for adults and children, originally launched in 2020 as a Miami Dade County Public Schools Teacher Training Program.

Molina’s dream realized here was to create a collaborative multi-studio space and  help elevate fiber art from craft to art.

The largest shared space are the six individual studios of Brazilian artists all incorporating fiber art in their work whether it’s soft sculpture, collages, or “paintings”.

The Open Studio introduces and shows the work of female artists, Aida Tejada, Angela Bolaños, Anna Biondo, Bella Cardim, Debora Rosental, Fernanda Froes, Flavia Daudt, Flor Godward, Juliana Torres, Marcela Ash, Marine Fonteyne, Mirele Volkhart, Paola Mondolfi, Robertha Blatt, Sarah Laing, Valeria Montag, and Vero Murphy, all living in Miami.

The classroom for fiber arts

Next to the Open Studio is the studio and classroom of Molina that can be viewed and should not be missed. Find everything from multiple sewing machines, wool, yarn and thread to cloth and pieces of her work.

Red Thread Art Studio, 283 Catalonia Avenue, Coral Gables,  is open for visits by appointment. Also the first Friday of the month there’s a studio open house from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.  The open house and studio visits are free. Journey to Spaceprovides guests with a hands-on, climb-aboard experience that explores what it takes to live and work in space.

This exhilarating special exhibition uses interactive exhibits and authentic artifacts to immerse guests in the astounding aspects of life in space, including the very real dangers that astronauts face during their missions above Earth and the adaptations that engineers have developed to help them survive while in space.

With its rotating mechanism, the Destiny Lab will give you the sensation you’re floating as you get a virtual tour of the lab from astronauts who have worked there.
