It’s no surprise to you all that there’s a restaurant explosion in Miami-Dade County. What’s happening now on the restaurant scene, the good and not so good, where the deals are, and how I am approaching this in MiamiCurated. That’s the topic of this blogpost.
With all of the new restaurants in town to check out, especially steakhouses, The Capital Grille Miami had been off my agenda for a long time, though I always enjoyed the clubby, comfortable environment, highly professional service and dependably very good fare. With news of a new bar menu, Mr. W and I made our way there for an informal end of the week cocktail and bite. The bar menu is served in a newly designed area called the lounge.
Mon dieu! A Frenchman making a pudding out of Krispy Kreme donuts. Mais oui, at French 27, a welcome new addition to French restaurants in Miami. It tastes a little like bread pudding, but has a bit of a crunch on top and is not so sweet as the glazed donuts. Just right in my book. Then it’s topped with housemade vanilla ice cream. Also worth of FF status is the Champagne en Rose cocktail.
A new art fair on the horizon this week, picks for reasonable eats, and new quality and value priced brunch on the Beach, all on Karen's Kudos for March.
French restaurants in Miami, and there are a growing number of them, are often about very good food and a party vibe. Some, like Bagatelle, often even have themed nights. Now I enjoy that from time to time, though it’s a welcome change to have a comfortable, neighborhood type place where the music is on “low” and the waiters treat you as if you’re a regular customer even on your first time there. And so is new entry Café des Arts across from Joe’s Stone Crab at 22 Washington Avenue (T 305-534-2555). That being said, it wasn’t surprising that the night I was there the chef whom I know from another French restaurant stopped by and said he often comes here to relax after work. This was also the place I took Gerhard Z, winner of the MiamiCurated contest, who came up with the feature name of Karen’s Kudos, to try his hand at restaurant reviewing.
Looking for something different and special to do with family, friends and as a solo? Back this year, on March 13 celebrity restaurants, caterers, pastry artists and celebrity chefs will offer up their specialties along with cooking demos and an exciting raffle. It's the Tropical Brunch in the Miami Beach Botanical Garden. And no one will be thirsty thanks to four wine tables and a Mimosa and Bloody Mary bar. Sponsored by culinary society Les Dames d'Escoffier Miami, the "Du Jardin a La Table" brunch is sure to be worthy of foodies and it's all for a good cause.
The city needed a place like El Tucán Miami, a modern-day cabaret that pays homage to Cuba in the 1940s, with its sparkling crystal chandeliers, crushed velvet stage curtains, gilded arabesque murals and golden palm trees. Designed by Robert Mckinley, principal of Robert McKinley Creative Services and designer of leading New York locales, including Sant Ambroeus, GoldBar and The Surf Lodge, it’s a place of glitz and glamour. But it’s much more – offering quite a show, including several singers featuring musical styles ranging from Afro-Latin to Parisian pop along with a DJ.
It was a coincidence perhaps that I went to the exhibit of Italian designer fashion from 1945 - 1968 at the NSU Art Museum, a voyage in nostalgia, and then a week later dined at Villa Castelli in Surfside, a restaurant that could be plucked out of Southern Italy from the same period. Nor was it a surprise when we found out the General Manager hails from Puglia, whose images dot the walls, and his Executive Chef Gioacchinmo Sofia from Sicily. He brought with him recipes passed down from generations.
Kaori Miami had only been open for a few days when Ivana Trump booked the first Saturday night and according to the restaurant, reservations are pouring in (we were going to have a party for readers but alas, we’ll have to wait until the spring). Italian Chef Walter Martino describes Kaori as a “divine journey of the senses, unlike any other dining experience”. This is the first restaurant by the “Million Dollar Chef,” where guests are surrounded in cutting-edge, 360-degree cinematography technology with art, ambient music, scents, and presentations infused with creativity. Italian and Japanese influences are combined in the unique menus with plates meant to be shared.
