Spring Chicken, 1514 South Dixie Highway, is one of the newer entrants in the hot fast casual restaurant category. The Coral Gables eatery is the first of four to open this year. Other locations include Miami Beach, Fort Lauderdale (opening in June) and Miami International Airport. The owners of 50 Eggs, which also owns Yardbird Southern Table & Bar on South Beach, are betting on the appeal of the Yardbird fried chicken as the cornerstone of the Spring Chicken Miami concept. The now famous fried chicken made the restaurant a James Beard Foundation Semi-finalist for “Best New Restaurant,” and a Bon Appétit “Top 50 Best New Restaurant in the U.S. And wait until you try their country club sandwich and sugar cane lemonade.
Leave it up to Dubai, the land of over the top, to have an ice cream cafe with the world's most expensive scoop at over $800. It's Scoopi Cafe Black Diamond Sundae.
My curated picks for the top six happy hours in Miami Beach for different budgets, vibes and food ranging from Nikkei and Thai to Med and pizza.
Finding a very good restaurant where the prices aren’t budget busting on South Beach is a challenge. And finding one with not your usual menu selections, very creative without sacrificing taste, even harder. Think carrot and beet tartare with tomato sorbet instead of the trite tuna tartare; corn 4 ways – grilled sweet corn, cornbread butter, cornbread rumbles and lemon popcorn; and little pumpkins — roasted pumpkin with crunchy quinoa granola and fluffy pumpkin cloud. And all of that is just in the “American” dim sum trolley, a clever conceit for serving light bites. That’s new eatery The Sarsaparilla Club, the work of chef partners Jeff McInnis and Janine Booth who also own New York City’s Root & Bone.
At lunch the line was out the door with people waiting to get into Grown, the hot new organic, fast casual restaurant by basketball star Ray Allen. Why the crowd? As I described to Shannon Allen, his wife, if I took away the sustainable paper plate my food came in and plated the perfectly cooked, moist grilled wild salmon, quinoa salad and garlic brussel sprouts at home, dinner guests would think I had prepared it in one of my better culinary moments. The credo at this South Miami eatery is “Real Food, Cooked Slow for Fast People”. And it is real – organic, quality ingredients, super fresh, and gluten free.
A news release on a new burger place appeared in my emails and my first reaction was, not another one claiming to be the best burgers Miami. We were looking for a quick bite and were in Coral Gables, so we went to check out BurgerFi, 136 Miracle Mile (T.305-967-8260). After one bite of their current special, Brisky Business, a burger made of juicy short ribs and brisket and garnished with housemade bacon jam, lettuce, tomato, sharp white cheddar cheese, all on a toasted potato bun, I was loving it.
Villa Rene Lalique in Alsace, France is the seven room trophy hotel and restaurant of the owner of the iconic crystal brand Lalique. As you can imagine, it has uber luxe furnishings and accessories, from Lalique Maison furniture, the finest crystal glasses and carafes to crystal panels designed by Damien Hirst concealing a 20,000 bottle wine cellar. And then there’s three star Michelin chef Jean Georges Klein who came to Villa Lalique last year and brought his culinary team. Pied a Terre tapped Klein’s number two sous chef to do the bi-annual remakes of the restaurant’s menu and, once again, it’s a winner.
Experiences is the buzzword in lifestyle these days in lifestyle and travel. Research has proven that they’re what all age groups are looking for in this decade where everything is about interactivity and immersion. Besides travel, arguably the area where this is truest is in the culinary world where one of the hottest trends is dining plus other sensory experiences – music, art, aromatherapy. Now we’re starting to have some of these options in Miami with the notable additions of Musimelange which combines chamber music, gastronomy and a wine tasting all in the living room of an art gallery in the M building in Wynwood and Pairings at Ted's at Young Arts.
