Heaven knows, there’s no lack of happy hours in Miami. Everyone is liking the value on food and beverage, the live entertainment, and the socializing thing. What’s your pleasure? A romantic happy hour? See our list. The “in” one of the moment? EAST, Miami. An older business crowd? TruLuck’s. Asian, Peruvian, steakhouses, Italian, French cuisine and more, take your pick. And they’re all around town. The newest addition to the list, and one of the best, offers delicious food, a large variety of choices, exceptional value, and the chef happens to have a Michelin star pedigree. Plus, Friday Night happy hour starts at 5 p.m. and lasts till closing. It’s Semilla, 1330 Alton Road (T.305-674-6522).
Those of you of a certain age, lovers of Jackie Kennedy and caviar will remember Jackie’s caviar diet. Said to watch her weight “with the rigor of a diamond merchant counting his carats,” she was known for eating a meal a day – a single baked potato stuffed with Beluga Caviar and sour cream. All this came to mind as I went to check out the new jewel of a lunch and dinner spot, Caviar Russe Miami at the Four Seasons, 1441 Brickell Avenue (T.305-902-6969) and found an outstanding prix fixe lunch, what they call the New NY Power Lunch.
Over the years The Setai’s highly professional service and well attired staff have never faltered. And we know that maintaining consistent service in Miami is anything but easy. The design of their spacious, comfortable restaurant Jaya with large well spaced tables and handsome open kitchen is still as appealing as ever. And then there’s the cuisine under the talented Executive Chef Mathias Gervais, showcasing all matter of Asian dishes – from Indian, overseen by their Indian Executive Sous Chef, Vijay Veena, to Thai, Japanese, Chinese and Vietnamese dishes. If you haven’t been there, or have been wanting to return, Miami Spice is the time.
For Miami Spice, I thought I’d try a newcomer to the scene. Being the sister restaurant to South Beach’s Juvia was enough of a pedigree for me to want to give Sushi Garage a try, and what better time than Miami Spice. More casual than its Lincoln Road relative, what the two have in common is very attractive design that makes use of natural elements – fresh plants as décor, light natural woods, simple lines, with an airy garden feel. It’s also very much a neighborhood place, attracting all ages and lots of families for a midweek dinner. With its long bar that stretches almost the length of the restaurant and the comfortable vibe, it’s a place I could see myself going to for a dinner alone as well. And stay tuned at the end for a quick look at my Spice menu picks.
In this, Part 3 of my Miami Spice coverage, I'm focusing on Spice menus I've tried and the dishes at each that I recommend. Why these in particular? Different reasons -- in the case of Bourbon Steak and Corsair their Spice menus are always reliably excellent. Jaya in the Setai Hotel offers fine Asian cuisine that's tough to find around town, very professional service, and moderate noise level for relaxed conversation. Then there's newcomer Sushi Garage, the sister restaurant of Juvia, which I've been wanting to try and this was a good opportunity. For the next 3 days you'll read about each of them. Day 1 - Bourbon Steak and Corsair.
French Morning, the national online publication for the French speaking community in the US, named L’Epicerie’s baguette the best of 2016. In this town with a scarcity of artisanal baguettes, this merited a special trip to check it out. It also turned out that the bakery and French restaurant had all manner of tempting baked goods, from an oh so thin apple tart from Megeve and chocolate cake in the style of legendary baker Pierre Herme, to feuillete, a cross between a croissant and brioche.

Different things to do this month with food, art, entertainment, new beverage sensations, and classes in learning to be a master brewer. Who said August was slow?
