There's a welcome new addition to Greek restaurants in Miami. Star chef and successful restaurateur Michael Mina has been best known in Miami for his popular steakhouses Bourbon Steak and Stripsteak. But now he has turned his talents here to seafood and his first Greek concept in the new Ornos Estiatorio Greek restaurant inspired by his visit to a fishing village in Mykonos. As with all he does, it’s already a success judging by the healthy crowd Thursday night. He brought in the Athens born Chef Nikolaos Georgousis whose pedigree includes Milos. Here he’s working his magic of traditional Greek favorites with a light touch and original outakes.
With a name like Artpie, who wouldn’t be intrigued.  I was invited to a shop and figured I’d see a display case with the pies and ordinary tables and chairs. Instead I found an elegant, stylish shop that was like a tea room. It brought to mind a shop in Paris selling macarons. And the Artpies? They are savory and sweet small pies made with fine organic dough, and with names like Coco Chanel,  Cleopatra, Grace Kelly, and Ella Fitzgerald. Here’s the scoop on this new destination in Aventura Mall, well worth the trip if you don’t live in the area. And there's another location in their factory in Little River.
There's no lack of Japanese restaurants in the Magic City but the menus are pretty predictable. Not so with Miami's first Japanese pub, Buya Izakaya + Yakitori . Not only is the menu creative, so much so that we had a tough time choosing, but also, the food is downright delicious. It's not surprising how good it is considering that several of the partners hail from KYU.  This is their fourth location, joining St.Petersburg, Florida, Berlin and Potsdam. Service is friendly, prices are reasonable, and dishes are served with two pieces for sharing as this is about small plates.
Four leading South Florida restaurants are going all out with special prix fixe celebration dinners for take out or dine in along with a Zoom dinner party on October 28. No wonder they’re going all out – it’s in honor of the birthday of Auguste Escoffier described as “the king of chefs and the chef of kings” and the founder of Modern Cuisine. The event is spearheaded by culinary organization Les Dames d’Escoffier's South Florida chapter (proud to say I’m a member).
Lots of eating news this month with more new restaurants in Miami, notable re-openings, places to enjoy music with your meal, star gourmet purveyor,  top rotisserie chicken, and other foodie news you'll want to know about.
So many restaurants these days have a similar menu – the ubiquitous Mediterranean cuisine as in influences from Italy, Greece and Spain. So I was delighted to find a new entry that focuses on the Eastern Mediterranean as well, including wine – Turkey, Lebanon and Israel, with their flavorful spices and different textures. Plus friends had told me the ambiance was very stylish, the service excellent and there's an executive lunch special that's a solid value. Off we went to Tur in Coral Gables, a place to which I know I’ll return many times.
A rock and roll brunch with live music, new cult favorite in Wynwood, Chinese banquet fit for an Emperor (or Empress), high profile restaurant reopening with outdoor seating, a notable closing, UK pub chef of the year's fish and chips and more in this month's Eating News.
AT OMG Brigadeiros I felt like Alice in Wonderland in a dollhouse,  with its pretty pink walls, tea room like tables and chairs, alluring scent of chocolate, and lovely chocolate confections. Now with 2 locations -  The Brigadeiros Miami shop, at 2205 SW 23rd Ave on Coral Way and another at 6912 Biscayne Boulevard feature the favored Brazilian confection for celebratory occasions.  Made of Belgian cacao, butter and condensed milk,  in 15 different flavors, it satisfies a sweet craving, and the size of the bite is the probably the reason the Girl From Ipanema keeps her svelte figure. Also, they have expanded their menu with dessert cappucinos, cakes in a jar, milkshakes, Brigadeiro cake, gift items and more.
Going out on a limb here, but I had the best burger ever shipped to me from Goldbelly. Good foodie friends, Mr. W who is a serious burger guy, and the New Yorker magazine agree. Now it's not one of these over the top burgers where everything is piled high and more is more. It's a "refined" burger from Raoul's in New York City. If you don't know about Goldbelly, you're seriously missing out on eating some of the best and most famous foods from restaurants, purveyors and eateries across the USA. Here's the scoop about the burger and my Goldbelly review.
The Citadel Miami is getting back in full swing with new eateries on tap, the rooftop bar recently launching a Beaker and Gray cocktail popup, and Pivot Mkt. with sustainable fashion, home and beauty products going strong. Plus, you can pick up a flower arrangement, orchids or succulents. Still to return, Nu Deco Ensemble, but hopefully that's not far away. If you haven't been there, it's well worth a trip to see this food, entertainment and shopping destination in Little River. Here's an update on what's happening in the eating front:
