I haven’t been this excited about a restaurant menu in awhile. Wayku Restaurant & Bar that just opened in Wynwood a few weeks ago has a creative and original menu, delicious food, and artistically presented dishes. We went last week and when I was leaving I booked a return visit with friends for a week later. That doesn’t happen often.
I’ve always been a fan of RED South Beach (formerly Red, the Steakhouse), so it was very good news to hear it had reopened with a pleasant outdoor terrace seating 60; new seafood offerings; and an expanded selection of Certified Angus Prime dry aged steak which is what helped make its reputation. It was doubly good news since a number of top steakhouses have not reopened and probably won’t. Also, unusual and a great compliment to the charismatic Executive Chef and Proprietor Peter Vauthy, 90% of his original staff has returned. We lost no time in checking out the “new” RED South Beach.
No one had ever mentioned Plaza Seafood Market to me, nor had I read about it in Miami. Then came a major article about it in The New York Times, identifying it as a real “find”, so of course off I went. And sure enough, it is a find, though shall we say a rustic one. Plus, it has an eatery. It's in what’s called “Little Santo Domingo” in Allapattah. You feel as if you’re in the Caribbean, so close to downtown Miami yet  feeling a world apart.

The Gramercy on Miracle Mile in Coral Gables has a crowd pleasing formula with its ambiance and American brasserie style menu, in great favor these days judging by the growing number of new restaurants featuring the elevated comfort food. A difference here is a contemporary spin along with a sushi menu helmed by a former Nobu chef. It's a solid outdoor dining choice, too.
A wonderful new spot to take out of town visitors (or just treat yourself), the Miami meat market for all cuts of Wagyu beef including hamburgers, new brunch and dinner menus from a fave, and if you like bundt cakes you'll swoon over these, all in Eating News for January '21, Part 1.
2020 was the year of ethnic food for me judging by the dishes which scored for the best dishes of 2020. Laotian, Turkish, Ethiopian, Greek, Italian, Japanese, and Chinese cuisines (plus pizza and hot dogs) all had their winners. Here's my list of the top eleven along with my reviews of each restaurant in case you want to read more.
In a time when many of us crave comfort food and desserts especially figure in big, I had to weigh in once again on my best desserts in Miami of 2020 (plus, you readers know how I love dessert). Though with COVID -19 closures and challenges, there were fewer restaurant openings this year that yours truly went to, there were still 11 standouts covering categories of ice cream, cake, pies, and even a milkshake as dessert. You'll see that some selections are more over the top than in years past. But after all, we have to indulge where we can this year. And if you're looking for great desserts offering home delivery, check out the link at the end. Enjoy!
I first tried Chef Lorena Garcia’s food as tapas at a fashion and food event at Bal Harbour Shops in 2019. CHICA restaurant Miami was one of several featured and one of my favorites. So it was good news to hear her restaurant featuring cuisine from all over Latin and South America with her own accents was reopening in the MiMo district. And what a welcome surprise to find not only delicious food with new twists, but also, an attractive ambiance with several open air seating options. CHICA is a welcome addition to Miami’s Latin food offerings, and stands apart from the others that tend to feature a single Latin cuisine.
