Celebrated Executive Chef Benjamin Murray created Benh Mi, an underground Vietnamese pop-up, out of his Downtown Miami apartment. Soon after his launch, Benh Mi began selling out days in advance through Instagram and became one of the City’s dine-at-home meal kit favorites. While continuing to expand his passion project, Murray reconnected with Michael Kaplan, his friend from culinary school and now NYC-based chef and restaurant owner. The two friends came together to transform the original Benh Mi concept into a brick and mortar location slated to open in February the heart of Miami Beach at 1436 Washington Avenue. Benh Mi will feature an expanded menu serving various homemade Bánh Mi sandwiches (a specialty), Asian-inspired salads and snacks. Also, (love this!) the restaurant will have a Vietnamese coffee and tea program and baked goods selection in partnership with Helen Kim’s Oori Bakeshop. Benh Mi will be open for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and late-night dining.
Spanish restaurant Bulla Gastrobar has opened at The Falls in South Miami joining locations in Coral Gables and Doral.
The Brooklyn hospitality group FREEHOLD selected Pizza aficionado, Anthony Falco, to assist in the creation of The Pizza Shop at the new FREEHOLD hotel in Miami. It’s a concept that is inspired by NYC slice joints of the 1970’s. The pizza consultant for some of New York’s most famous pizza shops, Falco has created for FREEHOLD a signature thin & crispy style pizza in a setting surrounded by traditional tomato-red booths and backlit by hanging stained glass lamps. FREEHOLD’s Miami outpost is located at 2219 NW 2nd Avenue, Miami, FL, 33127. For more information, visit FREEHOLDMiami.com.

Looking for a dining table centerpiece? Check out the roses at Publix. I had sworn off buying fresh roses awhile ago after several experiences buying expensive ones that drooped after a few days. This was after having gone through the whole process of cutting off the stems, changing water, etc. My friend Eleanor Hoh the Wok Star gave me the tip, and I’m forever grateful. They cost under $15 and the image you see is of the roses after two weeks!!!!
Ojo de Agua billed as Miami’s fresh and healthy take on Mexican cuisine has opened at 851 South Miami Avenue. It is the first US outpost of the Mexican group which has more than 40 locations in Mexico. Also on site is a small market with house made goods, produce and salsas.
With a name like Flour and Weirdoughs, you better believe I had to try this bakery. On the site of the former Oasis coffee destination on Harbor Drive in Key Biscayne, the bakery features traditional standbys like croissants, muffins and danish pastry and breads made with organic wheat along with Latin favorites including alfajores and empanadas. They have some pretty creative mixups, like a cruffin (cross between a croissant and muffin) filled with blueberries and cream cheese, a cinnamon bun made with croissant type pastry (a fave) and not your usual empanada choices including pork & plantain and steak.
And last but certainly not least, the “hot” new restaurant on the way that I have my eye on is COTE (“kowt”) from New York, America’s first Korean steakhouse. At the entrance of the Miami Design District on the corner of 39th Street and 2ndAvenue, the 100-plus seat dining room will offer its signature interactive experience with bespoke, state-of-the-art charcoal grill. Stay tuned.
