Mexican Restaurant with a Difference

It seems like every month another taco place opens in Miami. Many are very similar in menu and décor, as in rustic, with an open kitchen, and not much in style. Not so with the very successful Mexican born and bred La Cerveceria de Barrio which opened in late August. I can easily see why it’s so successful – a seafood slant, original menu items which hail from seven regions in Mexico, very good service, and a casual décor that’s “alegre” (joyful) and fun. Plus, for my taste, the guac is the best in town, which you can team up with housemade corn tortillas. Plus, there's a 20% discount for Miami Dade county residents!

Happy Place Donuts

As you’ve probably read, Dunkin Donuts is dropping the “donuts” in its name and who knows what else. But donut lovers near fear. There are plenty and I mean plenty of donut places to choose from. The Salty Dog, Mojo Donuts, Honeybee Donuts, Lovely Donuts, Velvet Creme and of course Krispy Kreme (did I leave out any?). Business must be good, as Salty Dog and Mojo are expanding with new outposts to come this year in South Miami. Though as good as all these are, my newest favorite by far is Happy Place Donuts on Espanola Way In Miami Beach. And would you believe they have ham and roasted turkey donut sandwiches, donut sandwiches and sundaes and more!

Feel Good Story: Taste of Immokalee

Do you know where Immokalee is? I’m embarrassed to say I didn’t. It’s in Collier County on the West Coast of Florida. Population 24K+, it’s an agricultural region populated by seasonal workers and immigrants, and happens to be one of the poorest areas in the state. Now, thanks to the benefit corporation, Taste of Immokalee (TOI), there's an uplifting, hopeful story that's tied in with delicious sauces and salsa that are sold in Publix.
