As you’ve probably read, Dunkin Donuts is dropping the “donuts” in its name and who knows what else. But donut lovers never fear. There are plenty and I mean plenty of donut places to choose from. The Salty Dog, Mojo Donuts, Honeybee Donuts, Lovely Donuts, Velvet Creme and of course Krispy Kreme (did I leave out any?). Business must be good, as Salty Donut and Mojo are expanding with new outposts to come this year in South Miami. Though as good as all these are, my newest favorite by far is Happy Place Donuts on Espanola Way In Miami Beach. And would you believe they have ham and roasted turkey donut sandwiches!

Their glazed type donuts (as opposed to cake varieties) are dense, chewy and actually have flavor even not considering the topping. That’s unlike others that are an after thought to the topping. They’re almost like an entrée. And, in fact, the specialty donuts are presented on a plate with decorations. Anyone for a knife and fork? The toppings too are first rate. On their version of the glazed, the donut isn’t dipped in sugar all round, but there’s a vanilla butter cream topping.

They make donut sandwiches and sundaes with gelato or sorbet,

donut balls they call happy dough balls, and homemade pop tarts.

A tough choice, but the ones that stood out were the New York cheesecake filled with strawberry compote, crispy nutella with macadamia nuts, the rainbow, s’more topped with marshmallows,

and a kids favorite, the nebula with sprinkles and glitter. Holidays bring special theme donuts so look for specials for Halloween and Thanksgiving.
