With so many restaurants now gracing the Miami scene, I decided to do a new take this year on the best restaurants of the year with special categories with the standouts in each. There’s also a new section on “go to” places for a casual, less costly meal. I've highlighted in blue restaurants I've written up in the past if you want to read more.
Miami is coming into its own in having fine chocolatiers. The newest, in Pinecrest, is the first retail operation for Garcia Nevett. It's named for two Venezuelan sisters who bring with them an impressive set of International awards. And then there’s a workshop where you can observe not only chocolate making, but also, one of the sisters hand painting chocolate Christmas ornaments. Find all kinds of temptations for chocoholics, from bombons and decadent cakes to ice cream toppings and even an XL chocolate chip cookie. And you can have a coffee or hot chocolate while you're there.
The dining scene is heating up now with the season getting in full swing. Lots of news on four hot new restaurant openings, more appealing options for New Year's Eve, frozen croissants that taste like the real thing and more. All in Eating News for December.

Just when I think there can't possibly be anymore events, happenings and fairs in Art Basel Miami week, 2018 turned out to be the topper. It's probably easy to do a week of 24/7 art, design, food and lifestyle happenings and never repeat an event or a venue. Fortunately, some of the offerings launched this week will become permanent, and many of the museum shows are around for the first quarter of 2019. I've indicated which you'll be able to see beyond the Fair week. In any case, here are some of my favorites in fashion, design and art this year because they're highly creative, fun, handsome, clever, skillful, or all of the above.
A new fave for uber tasty food, a comfortable and Miami experience, and fair prices is Vagabond Sushi Bar & Market . Now don’t think it’s yet another sushi place, this is Pan Asian. In fact, my standout picks were not sushi. It’s not surprising the place is solid – it’s the brainchild of Amir Ben Zion, formerly of sushi hot spot Bond Street and Miss Yip. He created what he calls Vagabond Village at the Vagabond Motel Miami with the restaurant, pool and bar, and “Brigitte”, a social/billiard room with cocktail and full bottle service.
There’s so much going on this month, that Things to Do in Miami in December is a two part series. And Art Basel will get its own special attention in a separate post. Here, part 2. If you missed Part 1, click here.
