I’m beginning to think that arguably the best variety and quality for value restaurants are happening in the North Miami Beach/Aventura area. Not talking fancy or “buzzy”, but the kind of places that are ideal for a midweek meal or something casual and not pricey on the weekends. A very good example is a gastropub with an unlikely name of Lettuce & Tomato Miami. From the name, one would think it’d be a vegetarian or health food restaurant. Not, except that there are solid vegetarian options. More about the name later. Let’s get down to the food. This place is truly a neighborhood gem and is definitely worth the trip if you’re near the Aventura Mall, FIU, or other points north.
As soon as I walk in the door of a restaurant I can usually tell if I’m going to like it. Of course, it helps if my expectations are high, as in the pedigree of the owner or chef. And so it was with DOA Miami, the new venture of Arjun Waney who is the restaurateur behind Zuma and Coya. DOA is the first of many Waney has planned, much as he expanded with Zuma which is now in major capitals around the world. What speaks volumes is if he accepted outside investors, I would invest. He has a winning formula, earning DOA a rave review.
The season is getting in full swing and there's so much to do that my post on Miami Things to Do in January is in two parts. From serious choices for chocoholics and art lovers to a new entertainment option and the annual Taste of the Garden, here is Part 1.

It’s saying a lot in Miami when I revisit a place I’ve liked two years later and it’s even better than I remembered. Such is Baoli, 1906 Collins Avenue.(T.305-674-8822) with the ambiance, vibe and people watching you'd expect from a restaurant/club whose provenance is Cannes. And it does one better -- friendly, attentive service and now, a new Asian inspired menu that had me craving more.
A reader gave me this tip about a French bakery Miami – La Parisienne Artisanal Bakery & Cafe , saying it had a French baguette to be reckoned with. And so it is, as I found, baguettes that are coveted by the likes of dbBistro Moderne, Michael’s Genuine and the St. Regis Bal Harbour.
