If, like me, you love donuts you will not, I repeat, will not want to miss the second annual festival devoted exclusively to one of America’s favorite sweets on March 30th. Called Donuts!2017, it’s South Florida’s only donut festival and was a sellout last year.
When was the last time you had a picnic in Miami? Now doesn’t that sound like a wonderful idea, especially this time of year when it’s cool and comfortable? The always innovating top chef Peter Vauhty of one of my "go to" restaurants, Red The Steakhouse, has come up with suggested menu ideas and for you shrimp lovers, shares one of his most popular recipes for shrimp.
These days, there's so much going on all around Miami that it's easy to overlook new places to shop, eat or play in up and coming parts of town. Such is Downtown where we discovered gems well worth a visit (on Monday you read about Area Code 305 Sports for the best sneakers). Better yet, have lunch and do your own walking tour.
Valentia Miami, an import from Valencia, Spain, offers top quality products simply yet beautifully prepared, quality and value. Word of mouth is spreading and it has become one of the "go to" restaurants on Brickell Avenue for business people, couples and families -- plus a good bar to have a glass of wine if you're alone.
When I met Scott Lundquist shortly after the opening of Coyo Taco in Wynwood he impressed me with his knowledge of and passion for Mexican cuisine. He told me how he took fellow restaurateurs on culinary tours to Mexico, and his plans for an authentic Mexican restaurant in Miami. He realized his dream at Olla which opened late last year in South Beach, and it’s a “joya” (jewel). Don’t think Tex-Mex as in tacos, burritos and the like. This is the real thing in an ambiance that recalls cantinas one sees throughout the country – weathered timber walls painted in earth tones, hammered tin chandeliers, and mellow lighting.
Don’t have a Valentine this year? Don't fret because Miami has plenty of ways to celebrate Valentines Day Miami 2017 for singles, girlfriends and guys outings . Here are our favorites for 2017, below. And don't miss the end with a list of ways to pamper yourself anytime of the year for under $100.
When I heard the name “The Deck Miami" and knew it was waterside, I was expecting the kind of very casual place you go to eat (rather than dine) in Key Biscayne or the Keys, a place that’s all about the view period. But then again, I heard the chef was Alfredo Alvarez, ex of Seasalt n Pepper (now Seaspice), then Palmeiras, so decided it definitely deserved a visit. It turned out I was right about the food but wrong about the ambiance. The Deck has to be one of the most attractive (in a European way), stylish and casually elegant restaurants in Miami. And then there’s the spectacular view of the Miami skyline. I liked it so much, I immediately booked a return visit for when a New York friend is coming to town.
Elegant stationery that harks back to times of civility and glamour, a super pick for inexpensive orchids that really last, next up in the excellent art and investment series at the Frost, and a French cooking and pastry school for dabblers, serious cooks and chefs to be. This month in Karen's Kudos.
What are the hot restaurants Miami to watch for this year and other new ones that opened late last year you may have missed? That and more eating news for January.
