Lost Boy Dry Goods

These days,  there’s so much going on all around Miami that it’s easy to overlook new places to shop, eat or play in up and coming parts of town. Such is Downtown where we discovered gems well worth a visit (on Monday you read about Area Code 305 Sports for the best sneakers).  Better yet, have lunch and do your own walking tour.

Lost Boy Dry Goods

Looking for something? Lost Boy Dry Goods probably has it. Seriously. The store has everything from vinyl records, coffee table books, old telephones, cowboy boots and paper wallets, to locally-grown, Miami-made hot sauce, unexpected vintage goods, denim and name brand men and women’s clothing. Walk in, and you’ll be transported to the early days of Miami. The shop can be found in the Alfred I. duPont Building, which was built in 1939, and offsets handcrafted brick walls, marble floors and concrete columns with Texan deer antlers, Tennessee barn wood, mining lamps from Colorado and family heirlooms from Florida’s own. Lost Boy Dry Goods is located at 157 E Flagler Street, Miami, FL 33131. It is open Monday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Culinarium at the Miami Culinary Institute

Did you know the Miami Culinary Institute has classes for the general public? Neither did we… until now. Choose from a wealth of culinary arts, baking, pastry, wine, health and sustainability classes like the ever-popular “Culinary Night with Friends,” where you and a group can prepare and enjoy a three-course dinner and a glass of wine. You can also learn how to make the perfect steak at a “Cooking Meat” class, or sign up for lessons about cooking knives, mixology, or how to perfect the art of tailgating. All classes take place at the Miami Culinary Institute’s state-of-the-art food and wine demonstration theater, and the list of available classes can be found here. Culinarium at the Miami Culinary Institute is located at 415 NE 2nd Avenue, Miami, FL 33132. Complimentary parking is available in the garage on NE 2nd Avenue, between 5th and 6th Street.

Eternity Coffee Roasters

If you like pour-over coffee, especially pour-over coffee poured over a glass funnel, you’ll absolutely love grabbing a cup at Eternity Coffee Roasters. Known for its single-origin coffee beans – all of which are roasted in-house – from Kenya, Colombia and Ethiopia, the coffee is smooth and potent. For a standard 12-ounce cup, expect to pay anywhere between $2.75 and $5.50, and then sip it slowly on the coffee shop’s long, comfy couch. Eternity Coffee Roasters is located at 117 SE 2nd Avenue, Miami, FL 33131. It’s open from Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., and on Saturdays, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Happy Hour at Pawn Broker

Brought to us by “the Pubbelly Boys,” the “First & First” Happy Hour at this new American craft rooftop bar fuses dazzling Downtown Miami views with $7 classic cocktails (like the Bees Knees with gin, honey and lemon!), $6 glasses of wine and $5 beers. It runs Monday through Friday, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Pawn Broker sits on the rooftop of The Langford Hotel, which is located at 121 SE 1st Street, Miami, FL 33131.

Bali Café

This Downtown Miami eatery is easy to miss when you’re trying to find it, but once you’ve eaten there, it’ll be hard to forget. And thank to Erik, a reader, for this tip. Owned by an Indonesian man, Bali Cafe is a cash-only, hole-in-the-wall Indonesian eatery with no more than 30 seats. Choose from the extensive sushi menu or enjoy traditional Indonesian classics, like chicken dumplings with sweet soy sauce or coriander-spiced beef rendang. The signature dishes are signature for a reason; the Lontong Cap Go Meh, a mix of chicken curry, beef, rendang, steamed vegetables, steamed rice patties and crackers, is to die for. Mr. W said that when Indonesian crews from the ships are in town, this is their preferred eating place as it’s authentic and cheap. Bali Café is located at 109 NE 2nd Avenue, Miami, FL 33132. It’s open from Monday through Friday, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., and on Saturdays and Sundays, it’s open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Kirk Jewelers

This sparkling spot has been family-owned and operated since 1947. While it’s known for its upscale watches (the store is an Official Jeweler for Rolex, Patek Philippe, Tudor and TAG Heuer), Kirk Jewelers also carries everything from Danhov, Scott Kay and Sierra bridal jewelry, to fashion jewelry, sterling silver and 18K gold diamond jewelry. All timepieces in the store come with the original factory-backed worldwide warranty, and if something breaks, the store’s factory-trained and CW21-certified watchmakers will fix it with only official brand parts. Find out more about Kirk Jewelers in our post about it here. Kirk Jewelers is located at 142 E. Flagler Street, Miami, FL 33131. It’s open Monday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Aliss

Sitting right in the heart of Downtown Miami, but hidden a few blocks from Biscayne Bay, Aliss is an international department store that has everything you need for home decoration and design . Started in Venezuela, this special storefront can now be found in the USA, Panama, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. It has everything you could ever need for your home – from actual furniture and home goods, to home décor items, plates, cutlery, cleaning supplies and holiday decorations. Aliss is located at 118 SE 1st Street, Miami, FL 33131. Complimentary parking is available at the Miami Tower for three hours, with store validation. Another parking lot sits adjacent to the store, which costs $5 for 90 minutes.

  1. Sitting at Eternity Coffee and reading the article: I can only second that their coffee is the best – smooth, and not bitter like in many other gourmet coffee places.
And if you haven’t been to Kirk Jewelers make sure to check them out – its the ‘gem’ of Downtown!

  2. Thanks again for sharing. Really looking forward to exploring downtown. I can second that Aliss has a great selection for good value.
