Don’t you enjoy the slower pace, greater civility, and lessened traffic in the summer in Miami? I sure do. But I do miss my snowbird friends, the choice of events and happenings, the excitement, the “buzz” of The Season. What to do to get out of the summer doldrums? Bagatelle.
If you haven’t been to Mykonos or it has been awhile since you’ve been there, you won’t believe what it has become. Going there for the first time, I expected the turquoise and cobalt blue waters and white washed houses (Mr.W , the artist, likened them to sugar cubes sprinkled on the arid hills) along with a buoyant club scene comparable to that of South Beach and Ibiza. I was not prepared for the high end design hotels, soignee beach clubs, post modern Greek cuisine prepared at the hands of Michelin pedigreed chefs, and very distinctive fashion you can shop for until 5 a.m.. Even if you’re not going to Greece , I thought you’d enjoy having a look at what is happening in the country’s number one tourism destination. Here’s the first post in a two part series.
The Miami food scene is heating up for the summer with a new one hour delivery service from many top restaurants, guest chef dinner series, new tapas bar, high profile popup from New York, a food truck that will cater your event and help disadvantaged youth and more.
Without a doubt donuts are the new cupcakes. It seems like every part of Miami-Dade has its own claim to fame in donut-land. The latest entry is Honeybee Donuts, in Pinecrest, the creation of Karen Muirhead who used to be in the corporate world and then pursued her passion, baking. Though open just a short time, the word has gotten out and the most popular varieties like maple bacon (sold on Wednesday and Saturday), chocolate salted pretzel and apple pie sell out in no time. Today for National Donut Day they're offering the Celebration donut free (one per customer).
From Sunday jazz brunch, a monthly art walk, and wine and paddleboarding, to a new summer food and wine series, here's Part 2 of Fort Lauderdale things to do to keep you entertained this summer (and worth a trip from Miami). In case you missed it, click here for Part 1.
Surprisingly, considering how many people love ice cream that there hasn’t been a shop that aims to have the best ice cream sandwich in America. Jimmy Shamieh set about to change this with C.R.E.A.M. which he started in Berkeley, California, with an offshoot that just opened in Aventura, 18719 Biscayne Boulevard (T.786-657-7905). The ice cream sandwich, he said, is "about rediscovering the inner child in you". They're delicious, fun to create and eat, and did indeed remind me of my childhood. And while on the subject of ice cream, wait until you read about Coop's MicroCreamery toppings, so good you can eat them without the ice cream.
Though tourism numbers to Miami scored yet another record, the competition for those visitors (and locals) dining dollars has never been tougher. Off season is the time restaurants take stock, do some retooling, or close. And others get ready for fall and the new season. Here are some notable openings such as 1111 Peruvian Bistro, redos and a high profile closing you should know about. I've also thrown in a few new places I've checked out and others on my radar screen for after my vacation.
