The Museum of Discovery and Science invites all ages to participate in an evening of sea turtle discovery this summer. Visitors enjoy an entire evening of sea turtle exploration and identification while uncovering the natural history and myths of turtles. Nature permitting, participants will have a chance to watch a 300-pound Loggerhead sea turtle venture out of the ocean to lay her eggs. At 9 p.m., the adventure begins at the Museum of Discovery and Science with an informative hands-on session about turtles. Guests will also meet the Museum’s Ambassador Loggerhead sea turtle who is almost one-year-old. Museum staff will provide answers to questions about nesting, threats and conservation before proceeding to the beach. The adventure continues to Fort Lauderdale beach where Museum expert guides lead guests to the sea turtle’s nesting grounds to look for sea turtles. Guests should be prepared to walk approximately one to two miles, and provide their own transportation to the beach. Participants must be 9 years of age or older. Piccolo Ristorante, an intimate, family owned and operated Italian restaurant in Fort Lauderdale, is hosting its second annual Lionfish Tasting Dinner with Reef.org on Wednesday, June 22nd. This year, Chef Andres Avayú has created a five-course tapas style menu. The menu includes a smoked fish dip, a “Surf & Turf” using marinated skirt steak wrapped around a Lionfish yucca croquette, a blackened Lionfish taco with tropical salsa, an IPA Lionfish over steamed Chinese rice, and last year’s favorite, the Lionfish corndog. Each course features a drink pairing. The REEF organization will also have a few representatives in attendance to offer a short but informative presentation on lionfish and the danger they pose to our reefs. Lionfish are a delicious, white fish, similar to hogfish or grouper. According to Chef Avayú, “a tapas style tasting is the perfect way to introduce people to the wide variety of ways lionfish can be prepared. And the more comfortable people are eating lionfish, the more progress we can make in getting them off of our reefs.” For tickets, please click here.
