No longer are kosher restaurants in Miami just about Jewish deli. Now there’s a new slate of offerings ranging from Israeli food, French brasserie and Eastern Med to Southeast Asian meets Hibachi Grill in Street Hibachi that recently opened in Aventura. It’s the first kosher hibachi in Florida. We went there recently to check it out and felt like we were traveling through the culinary capitals of Asia, enjoying delicious food, good service and a talented and very personable Executive Chef, Hezi Bedein.
With the days getting shorter and the weather (hopefully) getting cooler, the Magic City is gearing up for season and fall activities.  We’ve put together a list of fun things to do in Miami in September - from food and beverage events, perfume making and beading, to bird watching,  entertainment and the international auto show  - to help you kick start the season. Plus, big news for you pickleball lovers.
Where to go next in Greece, one of our favorite countries? One of the reasons we settled on Thessaloniki, the second largest city, is this year it enjoys the prestigious distinction of being only one of 36 cities in the world named a Creative City of Gastronomy by UNESCO and the first in Greece. But there’s much more as you’d expect from a city that has seen Ottomans, Byzantines, Normans, Venetians, Lombards and Jews leave their cultural mark and influence as well as Alexander the Great and Aristotle. What to eat in Thessaloniki that has been named the foodie capital of Greece?  Here are some of the amazing eating highlights you can enjoy as we did in a visit, along with valuable tips if you cook, on everything from buying olive oil and yogurt to olives. For an overview about what to do and see and where to stay, click here for Part 1.  And for shopping, stay tuned for Part 3.
Great news! You have another whole month, September, to enjoy all the deals in Miami Spice 2023 I wrote about last month plus over 50 more restaurants added to the list (for a total of over 300) and new experiences .If you missed my earlier roundup, click here.
The fourth in my series of chef owner/operated restaurants is the French American bistro Semilla Miami, one of my “go to” places since it opened. It’s the passion of Frederic Joulin whose extensive pedigree includes helming the kitchen for French President Jacques Chirac and the three star Michelin Guy Savoy in Paris. Semilla Miami features the classics we’ve always loved in a “buzzy” contemporary bistro atmosphere that’s fun, friendly, and welcoming, the kind of place you’ll want to return and become a “regular” which is exactly what I’ve become, for ten years (even had a cocktail party here for my birthday). It had been awhile since I was here, so decided to return and check it out again for my series.
El Capricho in Jimenez de Jamuz, a small village outside of Leon, Spain, north of Madrid, has the serious distinction of having been named as one of the ten best steak restaurants in the World by Luxatic https://luxatic.com/best-steak-houses-in-the-world/. Travelers from Asia and other parts of Europe as well as the US, some flying in on private jets, to feast on their high quality dry aged steaks raised in their own farms, accompanied by organic home grown vegetables including some serious tomatoes and strawberries, and accompanied by their own wines. That, in itself, was enough for me to put it on my itinerary for a recent trip to Spain, but I was also to find out that El Capricho is a travel destination in itself to spend the entire day. And then there are its neighboring villages with their own appeal and El Capricho’s six room hotel to spend the night.
Fusion Caribbean and Latin American cuisine isn’t one of my favorites. But now I’m a convert, thanks to The Rum Room in Miami Beach. With that name, you’d think rum was “the” main event. For sure, it’s “a”  major event, but the food is the surprise star. At the hands of Miami-born executive chef Samantha Cruz, formerly of PLANTA in Miami Beach and leading chef at events like Super Bowl LIV, Miami Open, and Art Basel Miami Beach, take dishes, some you’ve seen elsewhere and others that are unique creations and elevate them to exceptional flavor.
You'd be hard pressed to choose which restaurants to go to for Miami Spice 2023 with over 250 to choose from. Now's the time to try those pricey restaurants you've been wanting to go to, thanks to the special deals. Plus, new this year are signature dining experiences and a special offering from a leading private caterer. The Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau (GMCVB) program runs from now through September. See below for the prices, details and a list of all the restaurants to date.
Katsuya grabbed the culinary headlines when it opened for bringing the brand of Master sushi chef Katsuya Uechi to the SLS South Beach from California. Now, with a stylishly revamped interior design, it is staking out its place for “experiential dining” and a menu of rare Wagyu cuts enjoyed by Japanese emperors, along with Miami inspired sushi rolls and an elevated happy hour. The result are some standout dishes, one in particular worthy of my Fabulous Friday and a reason in itself for a dinner at Katsuya.
From Downtown and Brickell to Coral Gables and Sunny Isles, here are the best seafood restaurants in Miami. For the best in Miami Beach, click here for Part 1.
