AD LIB Coral Gables is unlike any other restaurant I've been to in Miami of late. It reminded me of the restaurant of an exclusive club of the low key, well heeled. The cuisine is delicious and refined under the direction of Chef Patrick Rebholz and two time James Beard finalist Executive Pastry Chef Hedy Goldsmith. The service is quietly professional, decor comfortable and almost soothing, and we had no trouble having a conversation. A wonderful place for lunch with a deal too.
Win a three course gourmet French dinner at Semilla Miami, French Bistro & Wine Bar, for two worth $150. It's quick and easy with a special drawing. Find out how, but note you need to reply by the end of the day Saturday, April 6 ! Also find out what you're in store for with my restaurant review.
Lots of exciting eating news this month: best baguette in Miami, seven new restaurants , leading fine dining and party spot ups the ante, a late night happy hour, "Made in Dade" at Sugarcane, a new bakery for Brickell, and more, all for March.
It's rare one finds a very good restaurant in a club or lounge. And rarer, that it's good enough to be a "go to" destination in itself.  Such is Myn-Tu, a restaurant with a club like decor, what they call a “dinner party experience” with delicious French Vietnamese food. It’s an extension of iconic ultra-lounge Mynt.  Executive Chef Meryl Villacorta and Sushi Master Seiya Noborikawa head up the kitchen, with a background of gold standard spots including Nobu, Blue Ribbon and Sugarcane.
Now is one of the best times of the year to go to Miami farmers' markets, the peak of the growing season. And just in time, we've curated our list of the best of the crop from all around town. In many of them you can also find local crafts people selling everything from soaps and candles to home decor items; home made jams, jellies, breads and pastries; stands offering tantalizing light bites for breakfast or lunch; and in the case of Lincoln Road, antiques and collectibles. Check out our five picks.
Love baguettes? How about other breads? If so, or just want to do something different this Sunday, head to The National Hotel, Collins Avenue’s elegant and cinematic Art Deco hotel. It's the Baguette Battle Miami, a “best baguette” competition on Sunday, March 17th from noon to 3 p.m.and it's open to the public. Created by French Morning, the first digital French magazine in the United States, the event will gather South Florida’s top bakers and over 200 foodies. Since 2016, French Morning has hosted the annual Baguette Battle in Miami at The National Hotel, followed by the first Croissant Battle Miami in 2018.
I know I’m probably going out on a limb here, but so be it. I said it. Café La Trova in Little Havana raises the bar on Cuban food and ambiance in Miami. Not surprising since it’s the labor of love of famous chef Michelle Bernstein and another award winner, bartender and mixologist Julio Cabrera. It  has the whole package – an authentic bar complete with the Cuban bartenders in traditional “Cantinero” attire and an enticing cocktail menu, delicious Cuban classics and Latin American riffs on the classics, live music several days of the week, and very good, friendly service. It gets a crowd of all ages including not the usual clientele on Calle Ocho — what I call the casually elegant  “blue blazers”.
March is shaping up to be the most exciting month for things to do in Miami. Here are our picks of events, happenings, for all tastes, interests. Enjoy!
If designers Versace and Christian LaCroix were to collaborate on a restaurant with an Asian inspiration, the look of Mandrake would be the outcome. Then add in culinary alums of NOBU, Blue Ribbon Sushi and Chotto Matte, and you have the delicious dining part of the equation. Finally, add in the "buzz" quotient of Kiki on the River, from where the owners hail, and you get the picture. Mandrake on 23rd Street in South Beach is a stunner, and the food is delicious too.
Coral Gables has long had its iconic restaurants that have stood the test of time. And now, in the past year, new ones on the scene are revving up the competition. Here's our list of the best restaurants in Coral Gables:
