As in many parts of Miami these days, the restaurant scene is heating up in the Design District, with several new additions including Northern Italian entry Contessa Miami from the owners of Carbone, Dirty French Steakhouse, Sadelle’s and more. My Italian girlfriend who, when it comes to food from her country is the toughest critic I know, loved everything we had in a recent lunch. And I concurred. In fact, when lunching with her, the exact same menu at an earlier lunch was a repeat performance for me. In the “buzz” quotient department, Contessa  is taking on Swan, though the atmosphere is very different.
Thinking about starting off the new year learning to cook or bake new dishes? A pavlova maybe? Or how about a new option for your catering needs, from small private dinners to teas and large events. Or maybe you or your adult child wants to become a culinary professional? Here’s a great new place I recently found and loved the event they put on for me. It's one of the top culinary schools in Miami  that provides all of the above, the Mariano Moreno Culinary Institute in Coral Gables.
A new addition to rooftop restaurants in Miami, this with a Spanish twist, taqueria for your list in Miami Beach and soon in Brickell, new restaurant by Master Chef Israel winner, uber cool vintage Volkswagon mobile bar for your next party, and a candidate for the next "it" restaurant, and more in Eating (and Drinking) News for February '23.
A high end, casually elegant seafood restaurant in North Miami has been missing. Enter Avra Miami from New York and Beverly Hills and in just three months the place is on fire, it’s so popular. The main event is fresh fish, not only the usual selections but more unusual Mediterranean favorites like fagri and lithrini, prepared any way you like it – grilled whole over charcoal, baked in salt, made into ceviche or carpaccio, you name it. Then there’s the handsome décor that’s a combo of city style and taverna. It’s open for dinner now, but can’t wait for their upcoming lunch and brunch hours.
A good friend introduced me to Jass Kitchen in Buena Vista, the newest of a growing group of Turkish restaurants in Miami. I was invited there for a birthday dinner. Just a week later I was back, which says it all. Jass Kitchen is an increasingly rare breed in a town where large restaurant groups have moved in ---an owner and chef operated restaurant. Jasmine Karadas created a place where you feel you’re in her living room, enjoying traditional Turkish food from recipes she has created and she learned from her mother. The dishes combine the influences of the Aegean Sea and the area of Turkey closest to the Middle East. Not surprisingly, Jass Kitchen is authentic, reasonably priced, comfortable, friendly, and the food is delicious.
Best desserts in Miami 2022, my picks. Whether you like chocolate, donuts, ice cream, flan, French pastry or more, there's something here to make you drool. You'll also find a few favorites from my travels. And if you missed the best dishes of 2022, click here.
Here it is,  my best dishes list of 2022. This year fish and vegetable dishes scored high along with Eastern Mediterranean cuisine which continues to grow in popularity, taking its place alongside the always popular Italian and Asian food in Miami’s restaurant scene.  Most of the dishes are from Miami restaurants, but some you'll see were from my travels in "foodie" destinations. Not surprisingly, all of the dishes are from many of my favorite restaurants. There's a link in red after the restaurant name where it has been reviewed.  I didn’t mention prime steaks as there were so many great ones, it was too tough to choose. (In case you missed my post on the best steakhouses in Miami and the Beach, click here).  Coming up next, best desserts.
