Like art that’s visually appealing in color and design, i.e. “beautiful”? Or because it makes a powerful social or political statement? Or for the resourcefulness and innovation of the artist? Or you go to museums to see iconic works by star contemporary painters like Joan Mitchell and Robert Motherwell? Whatever your pleasure, you’ll love the new exhibit at El Espacio 23, the contemporary art space of real estate mogul and collector Jorge M. Pérez in Allapattah. And stay tuned until the end for more fiber art at The Camp Gallery. Also, coming up next week, (in time for Art Basel), an update on what's new in Allapattah.
Fusion Caribbean and Latin American cuisine isn’t one of my favorites. But now I’m a convert, thanks to The Rum Room in Miami Beach. With that name, you’d think rum was “the” main event. For sure, it’s “a”  major event, but the food is the surprise star. At the hands of Miami-born executive chef Samantha Cruz, formerly of PLANTA in Miami Beach and leading chef at events like Super Bowl LIV, Miami Open, and Art Basel Miami Beach, take dishes, some you’ve seen elsewhere and others that are unique creations and elevate them to exceptional flavor.
The first half of this month is always about all things Art Basel, but now that that’s over, there are still so many cool things to do in Miami in December -- from fashion and design events to concerts, our picks. We love them—and we think you will, too!
For those of you art lovers, you may be surprised to learn that one of the preeminent print making studios in the country is in Tampa. For over 50 years Graphicstudio USF has hosted an Artists in Residence program with such luminaries as Robert Rauschenberg, Jim Dine, Alex Katz, James Rosenquist and others. And then there’s a benefit sale in May where you can snag great buys. I first heard about this at the INK Miami Art Fair at Art Basel and then made a trip to Tampa to see it and find out more. And if you like what you read and can't make it to Tampa, they'll be at this year's  INK Art Fair.
This month's Kudos go to exciting cultural exhibits including a roller dancing rink as art today, advances on Art Basel, luxurious indulgence for him and her, and a new Coral Gables spot for an OMG mega milkshake.
This month's Karen's Kudos brings a return of the Coral Gables Villagers House Tour, what's being billed as "Miami's first true food hall", an online site that should help greatly with holiday shopping and hostess gifts, and an artsy cocktail to kick off Art Basel season.
A travel steal, kickoff to Art Basel with their featured exhibit from the Lowe Art Museum, and a first of the new season at Joe’s Stone Crab highlight Karen’s Kudos for September.
Not only international retail brands but also major shows and fairs are following the lead of Art Basel and holding their prestigious shows in Miami, serving as a nexis for the Americas. The latest entrant is the renowned, Paris headquartered Maison & Objet that describes itself as “the premiere arbiter of global luxury in the home market” . And a look at the 340 exhibitors, 20 conference topics and speakers such as David Rockwell, the Campana Brothers and Karen Rashid will literally have you drooling.
Many high end restaurants in Miami are touting their dining experiences but, in the end, most are not that special except for the price. Not so Elcielo helmed by two star Colombian chef Juan Manuel Barrientos (“Juanma”) whose sensorial prix fixe dinner and beverage journey are seductive, both visually and to the palette. It’s almost theatrical, but not in a flashy way, but rather, in the sense of being a culinary narrative where every dish tells a story. It’s pricey, but a lot less so than other top restaurants, and worth it.
