If you haven’t been to Tampa in over a few years, I suggest you put it on your Staycation calendar. It’s a happening place. We’re talking foodie quality eating, craft beers (the craft beer capital of Florida), major performing arts center (the largest one in the Southeast US), visual arts, and unique festivals. That’s in addition to all of the family attractions you’ve probably heard of – from Busch Gardens Tampa Bay and the Florida Aquarium to ZooTampa,  and the New York Yankees training exercises. Plus, prices including hotel rates are a lot less than in Miami, even in peak season. Here are things to do, Part 1. Part 2 will be where to stay and eat.
There’s so much going on this month, that Things to Do in Miami in December is a two part series. And Art Basel will get its own special attention in a separate post. Here, part 2. If you missed Part 1, click here.

A much welcome new addition to the Miami art gallery and boutique scene is Zenith Art and Fashion. There are no fewer than 38 fashion designers and emerging and established artists represented from over 24 nationalities. Fashion Institute of Technology grad and co founder Carla Cid de Diego is one of the designers. The Spanish American womenswear designer's creds include crafting costumes for the Florida Grand Opera and Duende Ballet Espanol Exclusive to Zenith, she designs limited-edition leather handbags in precious metal cages crafted by her father, Fernando Cid de Diego. Her father’s metalwork is owned by the likes of Queen Sofia of Spain and the White House (bought by the Clinton Administration). These are serious, handsome handbags, part of a collection of wearable art and accessories. Plus, Zenith has an 8,000 square-foot outdoor sculpture garden which can be rented for events.
Did you know that many of the leading South Florida Museums are offering curated art tours with access to exclusive collections, behind the scenes tours, and talks by art historians? They include domestic and international destinations ranging from Rome and Florence to Peru, Los Angeles, Asia, the Biennale and possibly even the Congo! Most are offered to upper level members and donors. Here's what coming up for later this year and early 2019. And if you plan to do your own art inspired trip, there's a site I just discovered that features the best private art museums and foundations around the world.
How many times do we get to see art by a Saudi Arabian artist, and a woman no less, in Miami, even at Art Basel? Interestingly enough, the invitation to the opening of “I Am Here”, the exhibition of photography, installation and mixed media by Manal AlDowayan came on the heels of my having read a fascinating article about the new Saudi Arabian Vogue editor of Vogue Arabia.
Fashion lovers or just those of you who enjoy seeing beautiful things, will be pleased to hear that the first ever museum solo exhibition by Cuban-American fashion designer Narciso Rodriguez just opened at the Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum.
