Special Art Exhibit: Christie’s and Marriott

Want to get your art fix in before Art Basel? Christie’s and J.W.Marriott are having a presale exhibition of highlights from the fall 2014 auction of Latin American art in New York at the J.W.Marriott Marquis Miami from October 30 to November 2. Master works by leading artists range from Carlos Enriquez and Wifredo Lam to Amelia Pelaez, Alfredo Ramos Martinez, Rufino Tamyo and Beatriz Milhazes. The New York auction will be held November 24-25 at Christie’s New York. Here are the standouts (note, commentary is from Christie’s):

El Huron Azul

CUBAN MASTERPIECES
Leading the selection are works from two exceptional collections in the field of Cuban vanguard art from the 1940’s, the Washington D.C. based collection of Barbara Walker Gordon and the collection of Silvio E. and Jean W.Hernandez. Of special note is El Huron Azul, estimate $200,000-$300,000 painted in 1953 by Carlos Enriquez.

Mujeres Con Flores
Mujeres Con Flores

MEXICAN MODERNISTS
Mujeres con flores estimate: $2,000.000 to $3,000,000 circa 1938 by Alfredo Ramos Martinez encapsulates the artist’s most celebrated period, his California years (1930-1946), his mature style characterized by his imagery of noble, eternally youthful Indian women presenting offerings of local fruit, flowers and crafts. A visual tour de force from this critical period in the artist’s career, Mujeres con flores reached a record auction price of US $1.8 million when it was last sold by Christies in November, 2006 and is one of the most important works by the artist ever to appear at auction.

Bicho
Bicho

LEADING BRAZILIAN ARTISTS
Lygia Clark’s Bicho pq.(Versão 1) estimate: $700,000 to $900,000, executed in 1960, is an exceptionally rare and early example from the artist’s breakthrough series of Bichos (animals or creatures) which span the brief period of 1060-63. The bichos are significant not only for their rejection of the traditional canvas but for their pioneering engagement with the viewer whose interaction with these objects is integral to their experience. Bicho pq (versao 1) is one of the first bichos ever made and eloquently reflects the spirit of experimentation and possibility that embodies this series.
