Famed American artist Donald Sultan’s works from the series “The Disaster Paintings’  will be on display from September 29  at the Lowe Art Museum of the University of Miami. It’s one of their top exhibits of the year which will run through Art Basel week until December 23.A critically important series in the oeuvre of American painter, sculptor, and printmaker Donald Sultan, The Disaster Paintings were created between 1984 and 1990. They’re described as “imposing, man-made structures, whose industrial qualities are reinforced by Sultan’s preferred media, Masonite tiles and tar. The paintings’ resulting sense of robust permanence is offset by the catastrophes Sultan includes therein, which provoke a jarring sense of fragility, impermanence, and transience”.  Painted on a large scale (the majority of the works in this series measure 8’ x 8’), this exhibition includes 11 signature paintings from The Disaster Paintings series. It comes from the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth.

Having withdrawal symptoms, missing the stone crabs at Joe’s that’s still closed for the season? Never fear. You can be one of the first to enjoy them this coming season when they open for the night for Claws for a Cause, the benefit dinner for The Children’s Home Society  (CHS) on Thursday, October 13. Enjoy the classic stone crab dinner .  CHS supports adoption and counseling services and fostering homes  for abused and neglected children (I’m a former board member) and it does terrific work. Tickets are $325 per person and are tax=deductible. For tickets and more information, go to  www.chsfl.org/ClawsforaCause.
