If you haven’t been to Mykonos or it has been awhile since you’ve been there, you won’t believe what it has become. Going there for the first time, I expected the turquoise and cobalt blue waters and white washed houses (Mr.W , the artist, likened them to sugar cubes sprinkled on the arid hills) along with a buoyant club scene comparable to that of South Beach and Ibiza. I was not prepared for the high end design hotels, soignee beach clubs, post modern Greek cuisine prepared at the hands of Michelin pedigreed chefs, and very distinctive fashion you can shop for until 5 a.m.. Even if you’re not going to Greece , I thought you’d enjoy having a look at what is happening in the country’s number one tourism destination. Here’s the first post in a two part series.
From Sunday jazz brunch, a monthly art walk, and wine and paddleboarding, to a new summer food and wine series, here's Part 2 of Fort Lauderdale things to do to keep you entertained this summer (and worth a trip from Miami). In case you missed it, click here for Part 1.

The idea of checking out -- notice I didn't say checking in-- the Hotel Glace (ice hotel) in Quebec always had appeal, but I've never made it. Happily, now I was able to don the faux fur coat, Ugg boots and mitten loaners, and experience Miami's own Ice Bar, part of what's called the new Drinkhouse Fire Lounge & Ice Bar. And what an experience it is, with an impressive 23-degree Ice Bar built with more than 100,000 pounds of ice.
This month Karen's Kudos go to the Wok Star and her event for Chinese New Year Miami, a soon to come restaurant featuring British food from a UK Food Network Star Andy Bates, top of the line Nicaraguan coffee made in K-Cups right here in Miami (and sold wholesale) and an event billed as a "Decadent Afternoon" coming up.
When I was growing up and went out on dates, the drink to get was inexpensive Portuguese Roses called Mateus or Lancers. We ordered it and thought we were so, well, continental. A girlfriend reminded me that when the bottle was empty we put a candle in it to use as a centerpiece. And then for many years I never heard much more about Rose, nor did I see it drunk a lot until a few years ago at a South Beach hot spot where magnums of French Rose on ice were the drink of choice of the Eurosuave crowd. Since then, it's coming into its own here. In France, Rose surpasses white wine in popularity, and exports to the US increased 40% in 2013 and 32% last year. Now, finally, artisanal grower and producer from St.Tropez, Maison Angelvin with its celebrity pedigree and fashionista worthy bottle has established a beachhead in the U.S., launching in Miami.
Now here’s a different show stopping hostess gift for the holidays, or just to self gift, especially if you love Mexican food and drink. Maestro Dobel Tequila has just come out with wow packaging to house its heavily embossed bottle inspired by 19th century apothecary vessels. The container looks like a drum and in fact, complete with and a canvas like top, can be played like one. And then there’s the “liquid gold” inside – ultra premium Dobel "diamante" (diamond) tequila, the first of its kind that’s multi-aged. Here’s the story:
