Moon Over the Gables

The same team that brought us the wonderful Umbrella Sky event on Giralda Plaza, The Coral Gables Community Foundation and City of Coral Gables, will present “MOON Over The Gables” from March 9 to 25 at Ponce Circle Park with events each week. The Foundation is developing partnerships that will bring dance, music, cultural and science events in the park to augment the installation featuring UK artist Luke Jerram’s “Museum of the Moon.” Examples include dancing in the moonlight, goodnight moon pajama party, dogs event and yoga under the moon. For the full list and descriptions, click here.

The U.K. artist Luke Jerram’s spectacular traveling art installation, “Museum of The Moon” is the centerpiece of attention — a world class exhibit that has been featured all over the globe.

Measuring 23 feet (7 meters) in diameter, U.K. artist Luke Jerram’s moon features 120 dpi detailed NASA imagery of the lunar surface. At an approximate scale of 1:500,000, each inch of the sculpture represents 8 miles of the moon’s surface. Eight miles is the distance from Ponce Circle Park in Coral Gables, to the Florida Turnpike Extension or SW 137th Avenue.

Over its lifetime, the Museum of the Moon travels from place to place, and it gathers new musical compositions and an ongoing collection of personal responses, stories and mythologies. It also highlights the latest lunar science. The installation is a fusion of lunar imagery, moonlight and surround sound composition created by BAFTA and Ivor Novello award winning composer Dan Jones.
