Lip Lab: An Inexpensive Indulgence

lip lab, miamicuratedDon’t we all love inexpensive indulgences! And here’s one that’s an experience as well – Lib Lab. I just happened to discover it on a trip to New York, walking around SoHo, and loved it. The concept is to create your own lipstick, from the color and flavor (yes, flavor), to the finish, case and even name that’s engraved on the case. You can do it online too with a group of friends and make it into a party.

The way it works is you work with one of their experts, and spend an hour collaborating. You first choose your color or let the expert recommend one or do a collaboration. She prepared the color I first requested, then she suggested another one similar which I went with – a shocking pink.

Next up select a flavor – pomegranate, mango, peppermint. I chose to pass on the flavor – a conflict of interest with my restaurant reviewing (ha,ha).

Mixing the colors

For the finish there’s a choice of satin, sheer, luminous or matte. Once you choose that, she mixes up the different colors and adds the ingredient for the finish, That all goes into a mold in the shape of the final lipstick. It stays pressed for a little while.

Another decision – which color case, a choice of four.

The final touch is the naming of the color to personalize it. Check out the photo to see my choice. Lipsticks are vegan, gluten free and paraben free.

The whole process was great fun and I walked away with a lipstick that’s a conversation piece. The price? $60 plus tax. They keep a record of the client and color so you can reorder online for $40.

They also offer private parties for 6-20 people in the shops and online, custom lip balm and limited edition lipsticks. The day we went there was a bachelorette party from Denver.

Lib Lab has several outposts in SoHo, Brooklyn, Dallas, Toronto,  Nashville, San Diego, along with along with Mall of America, Irvine (CA) and Las Vegas. Hopefully they’ll come to Miami soon. For more information, click here.
