A gem of an exhibit is happening right now at the Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU, 301 Washington Avenue, Miami Beach (T.305-672-5044). Curated by Bernice Steinbaum, it features 31 works in mixed media, major names in the art world from the 20th and 21st centuries and others whom you’ll be glad to know about.
Entitled “The Chosen”, the exhibit featured selected works from Florida Jewish Art Collectors. Representative works include names like George Segal, Vik Muniz, Guillermo Kuitca, Hung Liu, Louise Nevelson and Nick Cave and many others from around the world. My absolute favorite piece is a mobile by Alexander Calder from the Circus collection, certainly one of the finest I’ve ever seen anywhere. There’s also a photograph by Evelyn Lauder (never knew she was a photographer) of one of her lady head vases. This one in particular was of a Betty Boop type character wearing a picture hat with a bow around the hat and her chin and pink roses (the one pictured here is part of the series but not the one on display).
In a welcome addition to the exhibit, the names of the collectors who own the piece are displayed beside the artwork. There’s a paragraph describing how they became involved in collecting, what informs their collection, their ties if any to the artist, and their collecting motto. My favorite was the motto of Dr.Sander Dubovy and Sarah Steinbaum Dubovy:
Look, look, look
Read, read, read
Will this enrich my life?
Love, love, love
In tandem with the exhibit is a series of evening lectures by collectors from now through the end of the show, March 8. The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Go during the week as it was packed and parking was a challenge on Sunday. But do go.

This is one of the exhibits I have enjoyed the most during a season of many fabulous museum shows. The curator did a wonderful job creating such a diverse and beautiful collection of collectors!
if this is a gem, it is seriously flawed……….very worn stuff indeed….yawn…….
