Diego Dominguez did couture fashion for the likes of the First Ladies of Venezuela, the “Misses” Beauty Queens and the like. He was very successful, that is, until he had to leave the country after a death threat. After a number of years in and out of fashion after that, three years ago he started designing, confecting, and selling his creations in a shop bearing his name in  Ironside. And his fashion aesthetic evolved.

The “It” Gala, Year Two

Last year, having had such a great time, I looked forward to the second annual gala, for AWOM, my favorite in town . And better yet, the theme -- Kings and Queens of the Jungle -- was sure to make a creative bunch even more creative.  Created and designed by millennials, it wasn’t your usual gala. French Caribbean Lifestyle PopUp

A unique French Caribbean lifestyle pop-up boutique has come to Wynwood, and it's well worth a visit.But note it's only here until this Sunday. Find some of the leading and most creative fashion, beauty and cosmetic brands of Martinique and Guadalupe. I ended up buying an eye catching long white dress with a fitted bodice and flaired skirt and matching bandeau bathing suit that could be from Balenciaga or Prada at a fifth of the price. Then there's handsome resort footwear, a natural cosmetics line, and perfume and scents label. Loved the sunglasses and straw beach bags, too. Have a look:

New Fashion (and Dog) Finds

Every month or two I go to Brickell City Center to see what new shops or services have opened, something that never disappoints. They’re often “firsts” for Miami and even for the US, well curated selections. A recent visit uncovered a Brazilian designer that’s perfect for Miami’s special fashion esthetic, stylish and well priced shoe store from Madrid with the season’s top looks, and a shop that specializes in custom dog leashes that tick off all the right things.

Fabulous Friday: Better Than Cashmere

Softer, lighter and fluffier than the finest cashmere I’ve ever felt is – would you believe – wool made from the fine undercoat fibers of wild goats from Kyrgystan, in the foothills of the Himalayas . It’s called Yangir. And then there’s the wool made from baby camel hair in Mongolia which it’s said “drives you to sin”   They’re the latest innovation and product of eight generation French company Brun de Vian-Tiran, founded in 1808, and  based in one of my new favorite towns -- L’Isle Sur La Sorgue in Luberon, Provence. There’s a museum you can visit and the products are sold online.

Pivot Mkt, Sustainable Fashion, Home and Beauty Market

Pivot Mkt, billed as the first all inclusive marketplace in Miami to exclusively house sustainable brands, has opened with over 30 brands in fashion, beauty, home and décor offerings. Products are for men, women and children.The 7,200 square foot space in The Citadel in the Little River District also has a sustainable beauty bar and learning center with instruction and "hands on" activities. Coming up October 5, a workshop in making your own lipstick and candles. In other news, the Nu-Deco Ensemble which is one of my favorite cultural offerings in Miami, has announced The Citadel will be its new home base this fall season with the first concert October 11 (see my writeup here).
