Diego Dominguez did couture fashion for the likes of the First Ladies of Venezuela, the “Misses” Beauty Queens and the like. He was very successful, that is, until he had to leave the country after a death threat. After a number of years in and out of fashion after that, three years ago he started designing, confecting, and selling his creations in James 113, a shop bearing his name in Ironside. And his fashion aesthetic evolved.
Once again he’s a success, launched from an Instagram post of one his creations which caught the attention of powerful celebrity stylish Danny Santiago and photographer Danny Cardozo. His clients include everyone from Juanes and Carlos Vives to the son of Michael Jackson. Famous women too. What is different, now, though, is his design esthetic. He has come into his real love, what he describes as “couture with a post punk esthetic” inspired by Japanese and Korean designers from Kansai Yamamoto to Junya Watanabe. Whether it’s your aesthetic or not, you have to admire the creativity, originality and drama of the designs.
He designs jewelry, hats, dresses, skirts, and tunics in a wide variety of fabrics. The leather and Vegan leather jackets will undoubtedly get eyeballs when you wear them. Prices are reasonable considering that they’re exclusive, one of a kind designs. Leather jackets start at $650 and Vegan leather at $395. Dresses and tunics are in the low to mid hundreds.
