Artisanal Coffee Bar Now for Miami

Artisanal coffee comes to Miami thanks to Panther Coffee at 2390 NW Second Avenue in Wynwood  and soon, at the Sunset Harbor Garage in Miami Beach. The big news is what they call third wave coffee. You can choose among brewing methods ranging from French press for full body to Clever, Haro V60 or Vacuum Pot, the latter which were said to deliver a cleaner taste because of paper filters which remove the sediment you see at the bottom of a French press. I opted for Clever and the Ethiopian variety which was full bodied, delicious, and unlike any other coffee I’ve ever tasted (I take it black). Then there’s a choice of coffee bean, all small batch, with a selection of Ethiopian or Latin American varieties (varieties change every few months). A welcome touch are flyers describing the origin of each kind of bean. Owners of Panther are Joel Pollock who was a coffee roaster on the West Coast and his wife Leticia who used to work for an Italian espresso company. Get the whole experience by coming during the week, especially on Mondays when the coffee is roasted. And on Saturday, there’s a coffee tasting at 3 p.m.  The owners go the extra mile with sugar syrups, white and brown, which blend in more fully with iced coffee selections. There are also a selection of loose leaf teas — black, oolong and five different exotic herbal varieties (Egypt, China, South Africa), and non coffee or tea offerings including Mr. Q Cucumber Soda, Sweet Blossom Rose Soda and the cult Mexican Coca Cola. Everything was top notch except for the pastries, which could be because we came on a Sunday and were told most of the baked goods were sold out on Saturday. It’s hard to miss the building with its graffiti clad facade and orange chairs for outdoor imbibing. It’s a sure bet that coffee lovers will soon get hooked and be back for more. Certainly yours truly.

  1. There is nothing quite like it out there, far beyond Starbucks and my fav, a standard cafe con leche, takes it to the next level. All a matter of nuance of course but its definitively Evolution.

  2. Indeed one of the best coffee retailers in all of South Florida. Perfectly pulled espresso shots, along with beautifully intricate latte art designs. Definitely not your run of the mill coffee shop, well worth the drive, a grand experience. Other great places are Eternity Coffee Roasters in Downtown Miami and Brew Urbane Cafe in Ft.Lauderdale.

    1. Great information, thanks Armando. I can tell you’re serious about your coffee. I’m going to check out Eternity.
