It’s that time of year again! And by that, we mean it’s January, when we all set those health and fitness resolutions that we’re sure we’re going to keep this time. But instead of following the trend and getting bored with exercise early, check out Miami’s bevy of cool, fun ways to break a sweat that might just keep you hooked. Join Rise Nation.
Personal trainer-turned-gym owner Jason Walsh is on the rise—and he’s bringing all of Miami with him! Located in Miami Design District, his studio, Rise Nation, uses natural body movements like crawling, walking, running and climbing to get us all in shape. Try your hand at underwater cycling.
Element Aqua, in Little Haiti, specializes in “aqua cycling,” which is exactly what you’d expect it to be: cycling underwater. For 45-55 minutes, participants can throw on a bathing suit and aquatic shoes and take their pick of a range of three underwater cycling glasses: Basic Cycling, Aqua Cycling, or Turbo Cycling. If none of those appeal to you, there’s also Aqua Boxing, Aqua Athletics, Aqua Circuit, Aquarobics, and Aqua Belly (for expectant mothers). When the workout is over, participants can take advantage of the studio’s private showers and get ready. This modern gym has it all! Element Aqua is located at 6200 NE 4th Court. Go on a group bike ride.
Every Monday morning, Rapha Miami hosts a pre-work “Monday Recovery Ride. The group meets at 6:30 a.m. at Rapha Miami for a 30-minute, 10-mile ride, with a brief stop for coffee. This ride is designed for beginner to intermediate cyclists, and road bikes, helmets, and foot retention are required. Participants are encouraged to bring their own tools to change a flat, an extra tube, snacks, and water. Rapha Miami is located at 3911 NE 1st Avenue #106. This ride is free and open to the public. Learn to row.
Looking for a fun way to tone those arms? Hop in the water and learn to row! The Miami Beach Rowing Club offers beginner rowing classes for adults with world-class coaches, state-of-the-art equipment, and instruction on both land and water. Classes run from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., are offered year-round and require a two-weekend commitment, with two classes per weekend. Beginner classes are priced at $195 per person total. If you’re in the mood to both stretch and relax, do yoga. If you want to do yoga with a view, do it at the Atton Brickell Miami hotel! Every Sunday at 9:30 a.m., take a FREE Sivananda yoga class on the rooftop of the Atton Brickell. The class runs for an hour, and when it’s all done, participants can take advantage of power smoothies, healthy snacks and more. Atton Brickell Miami is located at 1500 SW 1st Avenue. Run (or walk) a marathon.
The Fitbit Miami Marathon and Half Marathon is coming back to Miami on January 27th! This race, which attracts 20,000+ runners, walkers and wheelchair athletes alike, starts and ends in Downtown Miami, and passes through Miami Beach, Brickell and other trendy areas along the way. This annual race is also a fun community event; the whole weekend includes an expo, a kid’s run, a 5K, a half marathon option, awards ceremonies, and more.
