Things to do in November ’23

Order Up! The Pop Art of John Miller at the Lowe Art Museum

My picks for November for different things to do for all tastes including a vintage auto show, Taste of SLS foodie event, The Little Price Miami immersive experience,  cool classes for your creative side, art exhibits in Miami, Miami Book Fair and not to be missed Japanese jewelry exhibit. Lots to do!

This art exhibit looks good enough to eat if you like comfort food. Actually, though, you can’t eat it because it’s all glass! But you’ll have a chance to get a burger in a scavenger hunt, how’s that for interactive art! The Lowe Art Museum is featuring, Order Up! The Pop Art of John Miller, opening October 27.

This solo exhibition includes thirty-five pieces of Miller’s oversized glass sculptures of food, drinks, and condiments, contextualized by 1950s diner fixtures and fittings. Inspired by the Pop Art movement of the 1960s—including Claes Oldenburg’s whimsical soft sculptures of everyday objects— as well as the artist’s own memories of visiting diners near his father’s motorcycle dealership, Miller builds upon a lineage of Pop Art with his brightly colored glasswork.

Created between 2014 and 2023, these sculptures are “comfort foods,” both literally and metaphorically; they are intended to be accessible to all, whatever one’s level of experience or familiarity with art.

Complementing the installation is the Where’s The Burger? Scavenger Hunt taking place in the City of Coral Gables- November-January. Twelve signed mini burgers (sliders) will be hidden in site at a variety of locations- burger joints, public spaces, and even a bakery. Everyone is encouraged to take photos of the mini burgers for a chance to win one of the signed art pieces. The exhibit will be on view through January 13, 2024.  For more information, click here.

In the good news department, the Miami Herald and New Tropic reported that Max and Julia Voloshyn, art gallery owners in Kyiv, found themselves  in Miami after Russia invaded their native Ukraine. Once it became apparent they needed a new home base stateside, the pair decided to join Allapattah’s growing gallery community (see my post on a day in Allapattah, click here), opening the first U.S. outpost of their Voloshyn Gallery . While Ukrainian artists will be the gallery’s focal point, the owners want the space to be a vessel for “dialogue between Eastern Europe, Ukraine, America and Latin America.” Their opening exhibition, “No Grey Zones” intends to raise “pivotal questions about the terminations of wars and the ambiguities that shadow them.” You can find their new space at 802 NW 22nd Street.

Beginning November 9, 2023 through March 12, 2024, NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale will present Walasse Ting: Parrot Jungle, a comprehensive exhibition created to re-introduce Western audiences to the extraordinary world of artist Walasse Ting (b. 1928, Wuxi, China; d.2010, New York NY). Ting was one of the most radical and independent figures of his time. His work bridged ancient Chinese aesthetics and the European avant-garde with the American Pop Art multiverse.

Walasse Ting: Parrot Jungle will provide viewers the opportunity to immerse themselves in Ting’s neon-soaked visions of nubile women, flora, fauna, and an endless menagerie of cats, parrots and hibiscus. Parrot Jungle will make South Florida Ting’s honorary home; one perfectly fitting given the artist’s love of the region. Ting and his family came to South Florida frequently to visit his in-laws, who were among the influx of Jewish residents who relocated here between the 1950s and ‘70s . This exhibition will highlight how Ting’s signature motifs were inspired by these trips, where he discovered and fell in love with Miami’s wildlife park Parrot Jungle, a landmark he documented in hundreds of photographs and countless artworks.

For eight days in the Fair transforms downtown into a literary wonderland, hosting hundreds of critically acclaimed authors in three languages talking politics, pop culture, and all manner of impactful prose. Get smart, buy books, meet authors, and bring the kids too! For more information, click here.
