If you've never had the French pastry Galette des Rois, you're in for a sublime treat. The galette des rois, celebrating Epiphany, the day the Three Kings (les rois) visited the infant Jesus, is baked throughout January in France. And it's available by special order this month only in Miami from Semilla French Bistro and Wine Bar. Semilla's Executive Chef and Owner Frederic Joulin is not only a master in French cuisine, but also an applauded pastry chef. Born in Paris, his extensive pedigree includes helming the kitchen for French President Jacques Chirac and the three-Michelin-star Guy Savoy. He's offering the Galette to launch the reimagining of his South Beach restaurant into a French Bistro and Wine Bar along with a market for takeout, scheduled for January 28.
One of the “hottest” new restaurants in town is undeniably La Petite Maison. I’ve gone there twice for dinner on a Monday night and each time it was not only full, but they were turning over the tables twice in many cases. It was a monied crowd ( “older” money by Miami standards, as opposed to new money). I saw executives in financial services, lawyers, board members of art museums – you get the picture. And the first time when I was seated in a corner round table with a well starched, immaculate tablecloth illuminated by candlelight and surrounded by works of art, I had a flashback to the glamour days of New York in the 80’s, albeit with patrons dressed more casually as we do here circa 2017.
Villa Rene Lalique in Alsace, France is the seven room trophy hotel and restaurant of the owner of the iconic crystal brand Lalique. As you can imagine, it has uber luxe furnishings and accessories, from Lalique Maison furniture, the finest crystal glasses and carafes to crystal panels designed by Damien Hirst concealing a 20,000 bottle wine cellar. And then there’s three star Michelin chef Jean Georges Klein who came to Villa Lalique last year and brought his culinary team. Pied a Terre tapped Klein’s number two sous chef to do the bi-annual remakes of the restaurant’s menu and, once again, it’s a winner.
Mon dieu! A Frenchman making a pudding out of Krispy Kreme donuts. Mais oui, at French 27, a welcome new addition to French restaurants in Miami. It tastes a little like bread pudding, but has a bit of a crunch on top and is not so sweet as the glazed donuts. Just right in my book. Then it’s topped with housemade vanilla ice cream. Also worth of FF status is the Champagne en Rose cocktail.
French restaurants in Miami, and there are a growing number of them, are often about very good food and a party vibe. Some, like Bagatelle, often even have themed nights. Now I enjoy that from time to time, though it’s a welcome change to have a comfortable, neighborhood type place where the music is on “low” and the waiters treat you as if you’re a regular customer even on your first time there. And so is new entry Café des Arts across from Joe’s Stone Crab at 22 Washington Avenue (T 305-534-2555). That being said, it wasn’t surprising that the night I was there the chef whom I know from another French restaurant stopped by and said he often comes here to relax after work. This was also the place I took Gerhard Z, winner of the MiamiCurated contest, who came up with the feature name of Karen’s Kudos, to try his hand at restaurant reviewing.
