If you’ve never been to an omakase before, a good place to try it is at the new Sushi by Bou Wynwood. The price is affordable compared with many omakases that often run from $125 up until the $500’s. The service is friendly, and, in the Arlo Hotel, it has the Wynwood vibe.Omakase means “I’ll leave it up to you” and originated as Japanese street food. It’s a chance to interact with the chefs, in this case in an intimate space for only 14 diners, a menu adapted to your needs and likes, and a fair price.

Sushi by Bou has over 20 locations nationwide, one in Fort Lauderdale and this is the newest. This new addition redefines the  omakase experience with a 650 square foot space with 90’s hip hop inspired graffiti, dim lights,  and velvet décor. There’s a choice of a 12 or 17 piece menu. Each “course’ is one piece of sushi, and in every dish, Sushi by Bou features  fresh high quality fish sourced locally and globally.

Selections can include Hamachi (yellowtail), miso cod (a favorite),  Botan Ebi (spotted prawn),  chopped tuna in a handroll, Ikura (salmon roe), O-Toro (fatty tuna), Unagi (bbq eel), signature Wagyuni (“surf and turf”) and more. The  fish is sourced from everywhere from Norway and New Zealand to Japan and Barcelona.

Hand rolls and other sushi favorites can be made upon request, and additional à la carte items are also available such as the “Big mac” ( toro scallop, wagyu and Uni, a quadruple stack) and Bou’s caviar indulgence with one ounce of premium imported caviar. The idea is that the preparations are subtle so the taste of the fish can shine through. Preparations revolve around light sauces and herbs. Think chives, yuzu juice, garlic, ginger and wasabi. Soy sauce and wasabi are not served on the side as they’re incorporated into the sushi offering.

The 12 piece  experience is timed to an hour which might sound short, but we never felt rushed. The 12-piece omakase is $65 per person and the 17-piece is $125 per person plus tax and tip. If you like one of the selections and would like additional pieces, they are available a la carte.

The food pairs perfectly with a unique drink list of highballs and imported sake that can add a celebratory vibe to any occasion. There’s also a menu of fresh, signature cocktails starting at $19, including the Shiso Southsider, with Suntory Haku vodka, shiso leaves, simple syrup and lime juice; Yuzu Honey Bee, a combination of Maker’s Mark bourbon, honey syrup, yuzu and pink peppercorn; and the Citrus Highball with Suntory Toki whisky, Seltzer, yuzu, syrup and more.Sake flights and a selection of Japanese beers are also available.

Sushi by Bou Wynwood  is open for dinner Tuesday through Sunday beginning at 5 p.m., with the last seating at 10:00 p.m. Reservations can be made at sushibybou.com or Opentable.  2217 NW Miami Court, Miami (in the Arlo Hotel)

  1. We gave our son and his wife a gift certificate to SBB last year. They raved about their dinner.
