Eating News – February ’22

Sexy Fish Miami

From a much anticipated restaurant opening to high profile reopenings, a salsa night with competition and social dancing at La Cerveceria Tropical, to a premium extra virgin olive oil for your list, and a Lincoln Road ice cream (gelato) destination with a “secret weapon” and more, all in Eating News for February.

The much anticipated opening of Sexy Fish has finally happened in the Brickell area. It’s the work of Richard Caring, British businessman and restaurateur who owns the chi-chi private members’ club, Annabel’s in London, and is a major shareholder in Soho House group. It’s the sister restaurant of Sexy Fish London and represents a major investment what with uber pricey artworks by Damien Hirst, 26 bespoke fish lamps by internationally acclaimed Frank Gehry and a serious fish tank that stretches across an entire wall.

Chef Director Bjoern Weissgerber serves a diverse menu inspired by the seas of Asia, with a focus on Japan with  signature dishes including Duck Salad, Smoked Tuna Belly, Crispy Eringi Mushroom, Black Cod, and King Crab and Bone Marrow and get this — Gold Fish & Crispy Caviar featuring marinated gold-flake sea bass finished on the robata and served with caviar.

This being Miami,  Sexy Fish Miami will offer over the top late-night entertainment alongside the late-night menu, running on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

Sexy Fish Miami is open for dinner seven days a week from 5pm, with lunch and weekend brunch to follow. To make a reservation, visit www.sexyfishmiami.com or call (305) 889-7888. Watch for my upcoming review.

Overnight oats at Pura Vida

Pura Vida is on the move once again, its 10th location in the Brickell Neighborhood at 1104 South Miami Avenue! New to the chain is the addition of an all-day-cafe. The unveiling, slated for late-February, will also bring new menu items which will unveil exclusively in the Brickell location before rolling out company-wide. Welcome to the menu: a brand-new signature Beet Juice, new Sweet Potato Dish, and new Wellness Shots!

Mandrake has just reopened at its same location

Happy to hear that two of my favorite restaurants  have reopened on Miami Beach – Asian inspired Mandrake has opened at its same location and the French Bagatelle, one of my top choices for a party filled Sunday brunch, is at a new home at 1669 Collins Avenue.

DIY Kits for Sushi Rolls from Crudos Fusion Art

Kudos to Crudos Fusion Art in Wynwood for a idea for a party or family fun – sushi making. They pack up a bag with all the ingredients for making sushi and throw in a bottle of wine or prosecco. There are three combos — 6, 8 or 12 rolls. All include Protein, Sauce, Rice, 1 bottle of wine courtesy of the house, Bambu Rolling mat, Chopsticks. Price is $109, $139 and  $199 respectively. Looks like they’ll be opening another outpost judging by a sign covering the windows in Coral Gables. Hope so.

Popular spot Cerveceria La Tropical brewery in Wynwood is kicking off 2022 with a monthly Salsa Night with a competition. Dancers are invited to take part to win a grand prize of $5000. The last Wednesday of the month there will be a one hour salsa class followed by an hour to social dance and practice before the competition at 10 p.m. Those wishing to join in, taking the class and dancing afterward, but won’t be competing can purchase a $10 admission ticket that includes a beer valued at $7. Tickets can be purchased at eventbrite.com or at the door. The salsa night will also feature domino tables and cocktail specials like the Malecon Mule with Havana Club Blanco, fresh lime juice, guava and ginger beer.

Olio Piro Premium Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Thanks to Les Dames d’Escoffier I came to know the premium extra virgin Olio Piro olive oil from Tuscany. The small dark glass bottle right away said to me I would find a precious treat, and so I did. The 100% Italian 2020 blend is featured in the highly regarded FLOS OLEI guide as 2021’s Best in the World in the blended/medium fruitiness category. Its aroma conjures up fresh herbs; on the palate there are notes of grass and tomato leaf with hints of black pepper.  Equally important, while a premium Extra Virgin Olive Oil would be considered as high antioxidant if it contains over 250mg/kg of polyphenols , Piro contains an astonishing 750mg of Polyphenols per kg. Given its price (starting at $32 for a quarter of a liter), its best savored as a condiment or finishing touch to soups and stews, though can certainly be used as a cooking oil for medium to medium/high temperature sauteing and roasting. You can buy it online at www.olio-piro.com or find it at Casa Tua Cucina – Brickell City Center; Golden Hog – Key Biscayne; Source Market – Coral Gables and  Ana Capri – Pinecrest. It’s also sold together with high quality balsamic vinegar and in packages of 12.
