There’s nothing like a gelato in summer. And I’ve found THE best gelato in Miami. Not only is Bio Bio a neighborhood gem, but it’s a destination in its own right. Plus, besides the scrumptious dairy treat straight, they feature tantalizing confections and “slush” ices. And it’s all organic, with lots of selections for Vegans made with almond milk.
Bio Bio, in Sunset Harbour, is the first US outpost of the Italian based 60 year old MO.CA from the Romagna region. The gelato comes in 20 flavors, eight of which are Vegan. Besides flavors you’d expect, there are unusual taste sensations like ricotta and caramelized figs and nonna mia biscuit.
My favorite was the pistachio, OMG was that ever creamy and smoothe, with the pistachio flavor shining through. In the Vegan flavors, the extra dark chocolate tasted like a Valrhona chocolate bar.
And then there are the confections. I’m hooked on mini ice cream cones. It’s about indulging but without too many calories. Here they have seven flavors of what they call Trottola, including coffee, hazelnut, strawberry, extra dark chocolate. Then there are the waffle choc – a shortened cone with caramel filled pistachio or Nutella filled chocolate gelato. Add to that ice cream sandwiches partially dipped in chocolate, white or dark, with hazelnuts; chocolate covered bars; gelato cannoli and cakes. Drooling yet?
Partial to ices? There are rich, fruity ices in flavors including pineapple and mint, lemon and watermelon. They call them “slush”. Rounding out the offerings is a selection of Italian organic coffees.
Cups and cones start at $5.50 and Sicilian slush at $5.50. Mini cones are $1.99 and waffle choc at $2.99.
