When a shop specializing in workout and athleisure clothes (day to evening wear) calls itself a “boutique”, it deserves a look. Many of the big brands in the field like Lululemon and Athleta, not to speak of Nike and Adidas, tend to be eminently unexciting. True, here in Miami we have some Brazilian and Colombian shop imports adding fashion excitement with colorful prints and styles. But there hasn’t been a shop with a well curated selection of brands from all over the world – fun, fashionable, comfortable and durable. Enter the scene Flying Lizard. The proof of its winning formula? Owner Jessica Lurie opened her first shop a year and a half ago in North Miami, quickly followed by Coconut Grove and now Boca Raton. And she’ll give a 20% discount to you if you mention MiamiCurated sent you.
Jessica opened Flying Lizard after having been a manager at the cult favorite Green Monkey yoga studios. She has a great eye for good fashion, so one will have a tough time choosing which outfit (or outfits) to get among the fifteen brands which hail from everywhere from Bali (XO Active) and Brazil to Los Angeles and Canada.
Brands include Ultracor, Alo, Michi, Tyler Jacobs, Fit Mama and many more. Plus, there are a lot of choices on all fronts – not only brands and styles but also fabrics and sizes.
Happily in my book, there’s not a lot of black. And the black there is is embellished with mesh, patterned, laced with gold stars, and otherwise jazzed up. Find leggings in stripes, Jackson Pollock like prints, snakeskin, tropical leaves, and some luscious colors.
A big seller are the sleeveless graphic t’s, with whimsical writings like Cute but Psycho but Cute, Holy Guac, and Be Sweaty, Be Real.Be Real Sweaty. ($38 to $88).
Totally different and a standout are the Lauren Moshi light sweatsuit type top and loose lounge pants with whimsical appliques that you’d think were from Japanese artist Murakami. Another favorite were the sleek satin bomber jackets, all black (XO Active $189) and another model in white with black trim (Ultracor $245).
There’s also a line of children’s leggings/loungewear from Kdeer, Dramaqueen and Lauren Moshi in fun prints ($44-68). Prices for all workout clothes range from $68 to $185 with the higher end more for day to casual evening wear. And while you’re there, check out the Piper Wai natural cream deodorant. Jessica swears by it. Piper Wai was featured on Shark Tank for $11.99. There’s also Conscious Coconut Oil (coconut oil is all the rage in the beauty world now), that works as a moisturizer for body and hair and even to stop the itching of mosquito bites. Rounding out the offerings is a wide assortment of the water bottles of the moment, Swell, and commando underpants for wearing under leggings.
Shops are at 3162 Commodore Plaza, Coconut Grove.; 14761 Biscayne Boulevard in North Miami Beach and Boca Town Center Mall, 6000 Glades Boulevard in Boca Raton. To see more images of the fashions, check out her Instagram account @flyinglizardboutique.
