Heaven knows, we know that Miami is fashionable and attracts fashionistas, but did you know that Miami Fashion Week® (MIAFW) is the second largest fashion event in the U.S. centered around the themes of fashion, art, sustainability, and innovation. With dates officially recognized by the Council of Fashion Designers of America’s Fashion Calendar’s Important Dates (CFDA) alongside New York, London, Paris and Milan, it offers a platform for established and emerging designers from around the globe to unveil their latest collections. I was happy to be in town this year for MIAFW and see what’s happening in fashion at runway shows, images I’ll share with you in my photo gallery. To see more of the fashions, click on the link to each designer’s instagram. One of the more exciting presentations was of Karl Kani, the “Godfather of Urbanwear” who has dressed music icons from Michael Jackson to the present and was even mentioned in a song by Eminem.
Held at the Gary Nader Art Museum surrounded by million dollar art works by everyone from Picasso and Lam to Botero and more, Miami Fashion Week® (MIAFW) featured influential designers including Ágatha Ruiz de la Prada, Yas Gonzalez, Ángel Sánchez, Giannina Azar, Rene by RR, and Lisu Vega. There was also a Summit led by changemakers who are paving the way for sustainable style. The agenda was aimed at fostering a more eco-friendly approach to design.

A special word about Kani. Drawing inspiration from Hip Hop and street culture, Karl Kani saw a gap in the market and began creating apparel at the age of 16. Today, Karl Kani is a global phenomenon, having introduced the concept of baggy jeans. I also liked the story about his last name pronounced “can I”. He chose the name to reinforce the fact that he could make this brand happen, “can I”, “yes”.This historic collaboration marked the first time that the Karl Kani brand headlined MIAFW, and the first time the event has ever featured a streetwear designer. Her work has been enriched by the use of recycled ropes, found materials, poly silk, and some other textile materials. As a multidisciplinary artist, Vega’s work explores the emotions we associate with memories through the allegory of “weaving”, both literally through the physical materials and metaphorically as a process.
