Note from Karen: Sorry to report that INIVA closed.
INIVA Miami caught my eye when it was in Wynwood. But now in a sparkling new shop in Upper Buena Vista, its treasures of fashion, art, design and home decor really shine. Plus, put it on your list as one of the better gift shops Miami. The African concept store is described as traditional Africa meets Modern Africa. SAndra Bellon, stylist and Sophie Pozmentier, designer, have a discerning eye and taste, and have put together a handsome collection from ten artists, associations and craftsmen from Gabon, Burkina Faso, Kenya, Tanzania, Senegal and Cameroon.
It’s a small shop, but I found myself spending a lot of time, enjoying the creativity, originality and beauty of the pieces. In the clothing department, find light, short jackets in traditional tribal fabrics bordered by sequins and colorful fitted tunic style jackets, both statement pieces along with gauzy white shawls that are perfect for Miami’s climate.
There’s also a selection of cotton boxer shorts and t-shirts for men.
Lovely fabric beads, tribal collars, straw handbags are among the standout accessories.
For the home find chic baskets
and super thin porcelain vessels, unusual wall hangings, and select pieces of furniture.
And how about these feather hats from Cameroon, made into wall decor.
There’s also a selection of beauty products form the Inaya line from Zanzibar, like argan and baobab day cream, avocado and mongongo face polish and passion fruit and rose lip balm. Or how about ximenia and ylang night serum? How exotic is that! They’d make a different gift item for $6 to $26.
INIVA Miami is a unique addition to Miami’s retail offerings and one well worth visiting, 184 NE 50th Terrace in Upper Buena Vista. Click here if you missed my writeup on the other shops in Upper Buena Vista and vista Miami restaurant.
