Yours truly having a grand time

Missing live entertainment (where you can socially distance of course)? Head on to South Beach institution the Palace Bar Miami and its drag show. Their slogan,” Every Queen Needs a Palace”. I hadn’t been there but heard good things about it from friends, and I was dying to “mix it up” as I say, do something different and great fun. We reserved for weekend brunch, the early seating, which comes with a two hour show with five performers. There are also evening performances of its Drag Show in Miami seven nights a week. After going, I can see how it’s managed to be successful for over 30 years.

The fun takes place at a large covered outdoor terrace on Ocean Drive that is now pedestrian only, and the place was jumping. No fewer than five entertainers in eye popping dress and makeup that I’m told can take hours to make happen, walk around the tables strutting, mouth synching, and shaking their thing. Meantime, restaurant goers choose from the menu with the likes of steak and eggs, chicken and waffles and salmon benedict along with unlimited mimosas for $45. Sangria pitchers are also available for $38.

We arrived at 11 and left at 1:30 p.m. and were entertained the entire time. Note, this isn’t the place to have an involved conversation as the noise level is “energetic”. But after all, it’s about the show that is popular for birthdays, bridal and bachelor parties, and just outings with friends.  In the evenings there’s an a la carte menu of salads, burgers, entrees, desserts, — comfort food favorites. The drag show is 7 to 10:30 p.m. seven nights a week.

The Palace Bar Miami has quite a history that includes a few frequent celebs such as Nene Leakes, Andy Cohen, Ross Matthews, Gus Kenworthy, Perez Hilton & Lisa Vanderpump. In 2009, the LGBT Community Committee for the City of Miami Beach allowed Palace to decorate the corner street sign and crosswalk with rainbow colors, marking the location as a South Beach landmark and a meeting place for the LGBTQ+ community.
