The Latin music that greets your arrival, together with the ice cream color 50's cars out front and fedora and guayabera attired staff,  puts you in the mood for the resort experience to come at Havana Cabana Key West. Little was left out with this different, fun environment, and the guests --  from families and young couples to honeymooners, were all loving this 106 room waterfront hotel.
You've read about Istanbul, now is time for the add on -- Southeastern Turkey. Also, stay tuned until the end where you can read tips you won't want to miss for travel in Greece, Rome and Madrid. We chose the off the beaten track Southeastern Turkey, intrigued by the colossal ancient stone sculptures of the heads of Greek and Persian gods at the pinnacle of the 7100 foot Mount Nemrut, only reached by foot. And then there was the  recent discovery of a temple that rewrites history as it predates Stonehenge and the pyramids of Egypt, a boat cruise on the Euphrates River and a sunken city,  250 year old beehive houses near the Syrian border, and more. Here's a photo gallery of the sights.
What’s it like to travel in Europe as an American now? Here’s a first person account of the first leg on our trip and first stop, Turkey, a favorite of ours, along with my picks for hotel, sights, restaurants and a guide. Bottom line, it’s easier than I anticipated, there are a lot of safety protocols in place such as health forms for visitors that enable contact tracing, and a few restrictions that are pretty much respected. It was wonderful, too, to not have any crowds in what is one of the most beautiful months of the year here. We combined the Istanbul visit with a trip to the little touristed region  of Southeastern Turkey, once ancient Mesopotamia, crossed by the Tigris and the Euphrates Rivers, with unique sights, and the capital of the kebab and baklava for you foodies.Read about this in Part 2.
You're read about the best things to do in Naples and best restaurants in Part 1, so how about where to stay? The Inn on Fifth. Here's the scoop:
How to travel to Europe now, to plan the trip and and do's and don'ts? Here’s my experience based on our trip departing next week, along with important travel tips for Europe (and these can be helpful, too, for overseas travel in general). Here is Part 1 of my odyssey. Part 2 will be my first person experience once there.
Where to go for my first international getaway? Friends have raved about Merida, Mexico. And then I read how 60,000 readers of Conde Nast Traveler named it in the best small city in the world for 2019. Off we went, and it turned out we liked it so much we extended our stay. It has it all – a serious foodie city, incredible mansions built in the late 19th and early 20th century when Merida had one of the most significant numbers of millionaires in the world, very good hotels and museums, major Mayan ruins nearby, and designer shopping. Plus, it’s totally authentic, with hardly an American fast food chain in sight, safety protocols to the max and you can fly nonstop from Miami to Merida, Mexico (Just over 2 hours).  Plus you can team the visit up with a beach stay in Playa Del Carmen and get my friend and family discount at a top luxury resort.
A Philadelphia getaway weekend is perfect for a first long distance trip involving air travel from South Florida. We went for a long weekend and came back wishing we had spent more time. It’s eminently walkable, its art museums offer world class collections of art history’s greats, and it’s a serious eating town. And a very important plus at this point in time, a visit to the place where this nation’s history began, the Constitution was created and Declaration of Independence signed. It all seems more meaningful than ever. Here are more reasons for a visit and tips on what you can do and where to eat in a getaway, including a link to 30 different mini-itineraries designed for special interests.
Many of you are probably weighing if and when to travel by plane, so I thought it’d be helpful to share my first experience which was just last week. Plus, at the end you'll find a link to a guide to the "Best US Airlines of 2020: Who is Doing it Right in the COVID-19 Era". For those of you on the fence about airplane travel, here’s an account of my experience with tips on how to be safe on an airplane.
Have you heard about the new thing, the Workation? It's a new trend, a combination of “work” and “vacation”. These Miami Workations are special offers from more than 30 hotels, spas and attractions that are encouraging professionals to change their scenery to include a workspace at one of Miami’s many leading hotels. If you're on the fence about doing it, check out a few of the special services and amenities you'd have access to.
#1 Best Resort in the U.S. by U.S. News & World Report and 2020 #1 Luxury Beachfront Hotel in the U.S. by TripAdvisor. You have to admit, impressive credentials. I was looking for a Miami staycation and wanted to go to a part of Miami and a beach I don’t usually go to. Good friends went to Acqualina Resort & Residences in Sunny Isles Beach for a staycation not once, but twice, and raved about it. I had been to the spa for Miami Spa month and had lunch at Il Mulino a few years ago and was impressed. Then there was a chance to try the cryotherapy  facial. So no contest, off we went for a 3 day/2 night holiday. Tomorrow look for my post on things to do and see in Sunny Isles Beach.
