Rolled Nation

Ready to roll?  That’s cinnamon, sticky and crème brûlée rolls hot from the oven, courtesy of creator Andrew Gonzalez of Night Owl Cookies.

His newest venture, Rolled, brings coffee, tea and artisanal rolls to the next level, creating original concepts and rolls “that have never been done before,” such as the Cafecito-infused rolls made with Per’La Specialty Roasters  or the Guava y Queso roll filled with guava and cream cheese filling – yum!

With locations near FIU and one in the Design District, Rolled Nation highlights flavors representative of South Florida and its Latin communities.

Try the Bacon Scotch roll, covered in a scotch-infused caramel glaze topped with candied bacon.  For the less intrepid, you can’t go wrong with their best seller – the OG Sticky – a classic made from their signature dough infused with cinnamon filling and covered in a caramel glaze. Or, have two and sample the Cookies & Creme roll, infused with Oreo filling and a milk glaze and you’ll know why that is their #2 seller!

Rolled is located in the Design District at:  164 NE 41st Street, Miami, FL 33137.  Tel:  (305) 530-8951.

FIU at:  10524 SW 8th Street, Miami, FL 33174.  Tel:  (786) 580-4891.

The Baked Bear

The Baked Bear

The Baked Bear reinvents the Chipwich (remember those?) with its custom Ice Cream Sandwiches, baked from scratch daily.

Mix & match cookies or brownies create a melt-in-your-mouth ice cream cookie sandwich extraordinaire.   Choose a top and bottom cookie, add your choice of ice cream flavor and voilà – a match made in dessert heaven.  Fan favorites include Gooey Butter Cake Cookie, Nutella Chocolate Chunk Cookie, Snickerdoodle Cookie, White Chocolate Macadamia Nut Cookie and Classic Chocolate Chip Cookies, (among others). They also offer vegan and gluten-free options.

Ice cream flavors include bear batter, mud pie, mint chip dark chocolate, cookies and cream, butter brittle cake, blackberry crumble, caramel pretzel fudge (I could go on….), To be really decadent, add a topping of whipped cream, hot caramel, Oreo crumbs, Nutella, mini M&Ms, or brownie bites (just to name a few). Is this what heaven tastes like?

And, if that is not enough to send you into blood sugar nirvana, have the whole kit and kaboodle heat-pressed, so the cookies and ice-cream become sooo ooey-gooey.

The Baked Bear is located at:  909 Washington Avenue, Miami Beach, Florida.  Tel:  (305) 397-8737.

One pound cake and favors for weddings

The Real Almond Cake

Zandra Zampieri is a former New York public relations executive who fell in love with luxury Greek food products (and a successful Greek naval architect), lived on a Greek island for a year and a half,  and found a new passion: making  almond cakes inspired by mythology. The cake is made from an ancient recipe she found in the cooking diary of her husband’s mother from Patras in the Peloponnese.  The cakes are  made with pure almond paste and thin-sliced almonds. After baking they are soaked in sugar syrup laced with rum, a lengthy process.

The original version, a cathedral-shaped bundt cake,  is two pounds and comes in a tomato red box with a red ribbon and storing instructions. Inside there’s a story about the almond as a symbol of hope and eternal love. Zandra also makes minis in bite sizes and larger for wedding favors, and even fondant covered ones as wedding cakes.

Since all are made to order, she needs two to three days advance notice to prepare the cake.  Overnight shipping via UPS within Florida and 3 days to New York and California. Shipping cakes in double-boxes $45 + shipping.  local pick up in a gift box $40. Also available in a regular baking box (pink) for the die-hard fans that want them for their personal consumption $32, if picked-up. Contact zanka@bellsouth.net or call 305-968-6551,
