Fabulous Friday: Bark Air

Leave it up the New Yorker magazine to find this story which prompted my first Fabulous Friday post in awhile. It’s about Bark Air, billed as a “100% totally real airline for dogs”. Humans are welcome too, but then the rest is about the dogs. Here’s what has to be the best airline for dogs. Barkaccino anyone?

Bark Air was started by Matt Meeker who was inspired by the fact that his Great Dane couldn’t fly because he couldn’t fit under the seat. The inaugural flight was on a chartered Gulfstream V (G V), though plans are to purchase a Boeing 747. On the inaugural flight there was a golden retriever, dachshund-Pomeranian, white haired Chihuahua and Prague ratter. Instead of an air marshal, an onboard veterinary technician was there to administer dog CPR.

Humans only have to put on seat belts for takeoff, landing and turbulence, otherwise they’re free to walk around the cabin with their dog. And, get this, dogs can relieve themselves anywhere; the flight attendant has wee-wee pads. A doggie fine dining menu is offered and refreshments with items like a Barkaccino (whipped cream topped with powdered chicken) and bacon flavored calming supplements and doggie champagne (organic chicken bone broth).

Planes are not booked to their full capacity to ensure enough room to spread out comfortably. The cabin is prepped with calming aids such as: pheromone, music, warm lavender scented refreshment towels, and other comforts to help each dog feel settled. The concierge will also have a ‘just in case’ bag filled with calming treats, leashes, poop bags, and more will be provided at the gate.

These pampered pooches can also opt for a spa treatment such as a massage with paw balm.

The website also has doggie treats and toys and gift items which can be personalized for sale.

As of now, flights are offered to several US and European gateways including Miami. Miami service is offered exclusively to Chicago ($6000 per person). New York to Paris is priced at $8500 to $9500.
