If I hadn’t read British Vogue’s December issue of the top international emerging designers or been to Villa Azur’s anniversary party, I would have never known about the Venezuelan- born, now Miami fashion designer Sharon Osp. The word is getting around as this young, talented, quality priced fashion designer so deserves. And some clients don’t order one or two dresses, but even four at a time from Osp’s couture line. Her last Ready to Wear line sold out in no time. With the exception of the Vogue piece and another in Nexos, clients have all come through word of mouth.

The “Vatican” dress

It has been a long way from the then 9 year old making dresses for her Barbie in Caracas. At a young age, she helped her father sell clothes on the street, then coming to Miami when the economic situation became difficult in Venezuela. She arrived here with little money that she earmarked for a sewing machine rather than a bed, later going to work with designer Oscar Carvallo.

Now, four years later, she hasa her own atelier above Villa Azur where she designs and sells  her creations. Her collections are exclusive pieces themed by color. They include cocktail dresses and ballgowns, along with wedding dresses for brides and bridesmaids. She has a selecion of fabrics, or will go with a client to select the fabric. Her couture pieces are made here, the ready to wear made in Venezuela and Colombia.

She’ll also copy a dress from an image, adding her own special touch. Right after the Oscars or Emmys, she gets calls for look alikes.

A couture piece starts at $1500 ; wedding dresses, from $1800. Both prices are exclusive of fabric. Her most expensive dress she called the Vatican, was made of Italian tapestry and hand embroidered ($10K).  The Ready To Wear line, which should be ready in the fall, includes suits, sport clothes, day to evening wear and cocktail dresses. They range in price from $150 to $400 and are in editions of six.
