Not to Be Missed! “It’s a Wonderful World”

wonderful world musical at the colony, miamicurated

Do not miss the musical “It’s a Wonderful World” musical from Miami New Drama at the Colony Theater on Lincoln Road. This world premiere is fabulous, and almost certainly bound for Broadway. Based on the life of legendary jazz trumpeter Louis Armstrong, it features nearly 40 of the famed songs associated with him, impressive stage sets and choreography, infectious dancing , eye popping costumes, and great singing. Even if jazz isn’t particularly your thing, you’ll enjoy it. But you have to act soon as it’s only here until January 16, 2022.

The production has a Tony Award nominated British director, Christopher Renshaw, a cast of 18, seven member band, and a $1.2 million budget that’s four times the budget of its usual productions. It’s based on a book by local talent – Miami native Aurin Squire.

I’m not going to tell you about the compelling story. Suffice it to say that Armstrong had a complicated life and this is as much a drama as a musical.

And about the Colony Theater for those who haven’t been there.  It first opened on January 25, 1935 as a Paramount Pictures movie house. Recently, the building underwent a three-year $6.5 million renovation to restore its original Art Deco design and update its stage and technical equipment. Besides theater, it’s a venue for film, music, opera and other cultural presentations.

Tickets are $51.50 to $91.50 (includes service fee). There are matinees and evening performances, Wednesday to Sunday. Note that proof of COVID vaccination, negative COVID 19 PCR test, or negative antigen test is required as are masks in the theater. Go see it!

The Colony Theater,  It’s a Wonderful World musical, 1040 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach. T.305-674-1040.
