Hi Karen, I have a friend going to Miami, this time Italias with an 11 year old daughter. They are staying at Hotel 1 and interested in design (my friend is an architect). Any suggestions for dining or things to do, specifically design area but maybe for kids or near Hotel 1? Thanks so much. My friend Sarah loved all your tips! Said they were perfect. Best Em xx
Here are some architecturally distinguished buildings and interiors she should see:
Herzog deMeuron — Perez Art Museum, garage on Lincoln Road which houses Juvia restaurant
Faena District (close to her hotel) — see hotel patio a wow with $6 million Damien Hirst gilded skeleton of a mammoth and Reem Koolhaus cultural center under construction
Hotels: The Edition (nearby by Ian Schrager), Viceroy hotel lobby by Kelly Wearstler
Restaurants: Cipriani in the Viceroy (stunning) and also there, Cantina la 20 Mexican restaurant
Condos: Dancing Towers by Bjarke Ingels in Coconut Grove, lobby and grounds of the Apogee in south beach
Of course the art deco buildings on south beach and Fontainebleau Hotel
Bal Harbour Shops is an interesting example of smart design and highly successful retail for a semi tropical climate
Miami Design District, especially the parking garages
New World Symphony building by Frank Gehry, also near her
Restaurants in area: Klima from Barcelona; Jaya at the Setai (lovely public spaces too), Indomania for an inexpensive lunch of rijstaffel — all three very close to hotel; on Lincoln Road — good for a light lunch – books and books café, Spris pizza, Huahua tacos.
Things for kids to do — there’s seaquarium on the way to key biscayne, Jungle Island with animal shows, a children’s museum across from Jungle Island.
