Last week started the special hotel deals for Florida residents which last through September. In the hotel biz, they’re called “staycations”, being a tourist in your own city or state. I’ve done it, and it’s great fun. One summer I went to the Fontainebleau and did the whole thing – a spa afternoon, workout in their oversize gym, dinner at Hakkassan, lunch beachside at La Cote, and an afternoon at the fabulous pool. The only thing I didn’t do was go to LIV the nightclub (next time). At the end of the weekend I really felt as if I had been away (and didn’t get into a car the entire time, heaven). This summer hotels on and off the beach, from the Delano, Shore Club Mondrian, and Eden Roc to the SLS, Four Seasons and more, are all offering their Florida resident specials, several starting at $195 per night for the room. For an update of all deals, go to the Miami and the Beaches website . And if you want the Florida resident deals in particular, type in Florida Resident Specials in the Search section. They aren’t big discounts (usually about 10 or 15%), but they’re on off season rates and sometimes throw in value add features. Some require a two night minimum. The National also gives a 15% discount off of the breakfast buffet and lunch and dinner. The Four Seasons throws in parking, access to Sports Club/LA and all of its classes, and you can upgrade to a suite for $50. Hot spot SLS starts at $285 and gives a $75 credit on food and beverage and an upgrade based on availability. Miami tourism also has named June romance month so there are a number of hotel specials for couples as well. Similar Florida resident offers are in effect throughout the state, so if you’ve thought of going to Orlando, Palm Beach or other points north, now might be just the time.
