Definitive Packing Tips

I’ve read a lot of articles about packing tips for travel , but most of them are too much work for me. So I was pleased to read tips that are easy, quick, and cost little if nothing. Here’s what Travel and Leisure magazine recently recommended:

  • The Roll-Up Squeeze — Fold each item in half ,then coil it up before putting it in your carry on and fill all of the corners. This saves space and minimizes wrinkling.
  • The Layer Cake — Place sheets of dry cleaner plastic or tissue between dresses or shirts. You can also leave items on hangers in the plastic dry cleaning bags (even easier and better said I).
  • Invest in a few Ziploc Space Bags. They say they’re great for compressing ski sweaters. (My comment: bring a few Ziplocs in different sizes — terrific for wet bathing suits, bringing something to eat on the plane that you buy in the local grocery store, for makeup, etc.)
  • And here’s one I never heard of — Porta-pockets.The Pack-it Specter Cube set are separate inner pouches for holding accessories, panties, sleepwear, etc. so you know exactly where the items are in a pinch, and you can hang it up as is in your closet ($38 for a set of three). Plus, they have the set in a bright orange so it’s easy to find in a suitcase.

How about you, any tips to share?
