It’s Never Too Late

It’s never too late for just about everything. An exception — tattooing. Then again, was that ever in the cards?

For my birthday I got a pair of earrings for pierced ears. Problem. My ears aren’t pierced. But there’s a surprise to this story. I decided to get my ears pierced and open up all kinds of new fashion possibilities. Recommended was H & H Jewels, 3434 Main Highway, Coconut Grove, whose owner, “H”, has been piercing ears for 30 years. I went there and was all psyched. Then he told me that I shouldn’t wear my costume earrings for six weeks to play it safe.

Sadly, this made a lot of sense to me but no big bold earrings for six weeks? Won’t do. Just as I was ready to leave, he looked at my ears and discovered the holes that had been made in my ears when I was 22 and living in Bogota, Colombia. I had stopped wearing earrings since pus came out of my ears and I never wore pierced earrings since. He tried putting in some gold posts in those very holes and voila! Success. After wearing the posts for a week I went back and he helped me put in my new “birthday” earrings. So if you’re looking to have your ears pierced, “H” is the one to do it. And while you’re there, check out the curated selection of fine jewelry and watches, brands including Balinese designer John Hardy, Italian Marco Bicego and Suzanne Kalan as well as luxury names like Bulgari, Tiffany and Ulysse Nardin. He also makes bespoke jewelry as well (pictured here).
